About the Item

Three Mission Bells "Three Mission Bells Impressionism 8"x6" Landscape Southwest USA" This small chapel is connected to the Mission San Xavier de Bac in Arizona. The artist noticed how the white mission made the blue sky look even more blue! The church's design reflects Spain's Baroque style, featuring elaborate, dramatic elements on both the interior and exterior. Its thick walls, arches, and vaults are made from low-fire clay brick, stone, and lime mortar, with vaulted masonry roofing—a rarity in U.S. Spanish Colonial buildings. V....Vaughan is known for impressionist paintings of wildlife, western themes, scenes in Italy, France and all things Texas . Her paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Gadsen Alabama Museum of Art, the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art (in NE) and the Great Plains Art Museum at the University of Nebraska, as well as in countless private collections. She is a dedicated blogger and teacher of art! Since 2021, she has conducted yearly workshops at a castle in France, where artists get to live and enjoy art making and life in a 12th century castle all to themselves. A lifelong Texan, Vaughan has lived her lifetime in the Austin area of Central Texas. As a child, she exhibited a love of making art and played the role of the creative one among the seven children in her family. She began a graphic arts career at 16, first designing for the businesses owned by her siblings but eventually rising to creative director at several Austin area agencies. “My big family always conveyed to me that my art was a God-given talent,” she says. “Somehow that made me feel that it was something I was supposed to do. This gave me permission to pursue it.” Vaughan attended college on athletic scholarship, though she filled her schedule with art classes and subsequently secured an internship at an advertising agency. That introduction to the corporate world set her off in a new direction—she left school to parlay the summer job into a full-time position. She continued to work as a commercial artist for several years, winning prestigious ADDY Awards and working on high-profile accounts including Samsung, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, RockSports and Harcourt Publishing. Marriage and children prompted her move into free-lance agency work, illustration, design and personal projects. Her most notable efforts have included “Big Fun Maps”, RockSports T-Shirt lines of sports designs, and as a fine art painter, and instructor. Her renowned solo exhibit, "Last Year on the Farm” traveled the USA in 2010 and received national exposure. “I paint because it’s the best way I know to communicate, study, and SHARE the many wonders of creation”.

Mission Palm Shadow Impressionism 8"x6" Landscape Southwest USA
Located in Houston, TX
Mission San Jose in San Antonio is known for spectacular architecture, but the dramatic shadow cast by one simple palm tree shows the light and shadow in the painting. Founding the “Queen of the Missions” In 1719, Father Margil de Jesús, a seasoned Franciscan missionary, was at Mission San Antonio de Valero (today’s Alamo), awaiting the opportunity to re-establish missions in east Texas. Before too long, he saw need for another mission in the San Antonio River valley. He wrote the Marqués de Aguayo, then governor of the Province of Coahuila and Texas, requesting permission to establish a second mission south of San Antonio de Valero. He felt he was prepared to establish this mission at once as he had necessary church goods with him, even a statue of Saint Joseph. The Marqués agreed and founding ceremonies took place on February 23, 1720. On February 23, 1720 the Writ of Possession was signed for this mission, read the Writ of Possession here. Leaders of three Indian bands that wanted to come into the mission were appointed governor, judge, and sheriff in the new community of San José y San Miguel de Aguayo. Father Margil entrusted the care of the project to Father Núñez and two soldiers. The building of the limestone church, with its extraordinary Spanish colonial Baroque architecture and statuary began in 1768 — the peak of this mission’s development. At that time there were 350 Indians residing in 84 two-room apartments. Based on Father Morfi’s description of what he saw here when he visited in 1777, the church of Mission San José came to be known as the “Queen of the Missions.” V....Vaughan is known for impressionist paintings of wildlife...

Old New Mexico Church, Oil Painting
By Sherri Aldawood
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Sherri Aldawood came across this old church in a forested area east of Santa Fe, New Mexico. "The setting sun cast a warm glow on the building, which I found very appealing," she says.

About the Artist
Sherri Aldawood didn't intend to always paint flowers, but over time her love of gardens started to permeate her art. She focuses on the light and color of the flowers on the canvas. Sherri prefers alla prima, working with wet layers of paint instead of letting them dry. She keeps the paint as wet as possible by using walnut and clove oil to extend the drying time.
