A lovely landscape painting of haymakers in a field by Walter Williams. A woman can be seen gathering freshly cut hay as a child rests on a stack nearby. Whilst other workers continue to labour in the field, two villagers chat over a fence next to a cottage. The reverse of the painting bears the original handwritten label by the artist which also gives his address at the time of Florence Villas, Lonsdale Road, Barnes, Surrey.
Walter Williams was born in North London on the 29 November 1834 to the artist George Augustus Williams (1814-1901) and his wife Caroline Francis (nee Smith). He was part of the Williams family of artists founded by his grandfather Edward Williams (1781-1855). His uncles Edward Charles Williams (1807-1881), Henry John Boddington (1811-1865), Arthur Gilbert (1819-1895), Sidney Richard Percy (1821–1886) and Alfred Walter Williams (1824–1905) were all artists.
He was christened George after his father, but later used his middle name to distinguish between the two. He lived with his family in Liverpool Street on the Grays Inn Road in London until around 1846 when they moved to Castlenau Villas in Barnes. Williams was taught by his father and may have also received guidance from other members of the Williams family including his Grandfather. His father worked out of neighbouring studios with his grandfather and uncles and Williams and his cousins often joined them there to paint.
He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1854 and went on to exhibit at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. On 27 June, 1857 he married Jane Pearcy (1832-1872) who was also an artist. They lived at 8 Lonsdale Terrace on Lonsdale Road in Barnes and went on to have two children, Florence and Cyril who inherited their parent’s talent. The house was renamed Florence Villa from 1870. After the death of his wife in 1872 he continued living in Lonsdale Road. Sometime around the late 1890’s he remarried and moved with his second wife Mary to 20 Lonsdale Road. Williams died in Richmond on 14 April, 1906.
Examples of his work can be found at the Beverley Art Gallery and Hastings Museum
Art Gallery.

Walter Williams
Walter Williams was one of the four sons of Edward Williams. On 2 June 1857, Walter Williams married Jane Pearcy at St George’s, Hanover Square, not then a very salubrious district. His wife was the daughter of William Pearcy, a glass dealer, who was related to Clara Boddington. Jane and Walter lived in apparently comfortable circumstances at 8 Londsdale Terrace, Barnes. Walter Williams was a landscape painter working mainly in Wales but also in England. He was a member of the Williams family of painters and was the son of George Augustus Williams. He exhibited mainly at Suffolk Street, also at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1880 as well as at the British Institution. Williams exhibited thirty-two paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham.

19th century Antique English Victorian Summer Harvest landscape, with figures.
By John Mundell
Located in Woodbury, CT
19th century English Antique Victorian Summertime Harvest landscape, with figures.
John Mundell was a British painter of landscapes as well as river scenes and coastal views. It is suggested that Mundell was a pseudonym of John James Wilson. Mundell’s work was vigorous, bright, and attractive and compares favorably with the work of many of the better artists of his time.
This is a very fine example of the artist's work. It is a rare composition for the artist as he mostly painted marines.
This piece is framed in its original antique gold leaf frame
