About the Item

Walter Williams British, (1834-1906) Near Leith Hill, Surrey Oil on canvas, signed inscribed on old label verso Image size: 15.25 inches x 23.25 inches Size including frame: 21.25 inches x 29.25 inches Provenance: Frost Reed A lovely landscape painting of haymakers in a field by Walter Williams. A woman can be seen gathering freshly cut hay as a child rests on a stack nearby. Whilst other workers continue to labour in the field, two villagers chat over a fence next to a cottage. The reverse of the painting bears the original handwritten label by the artist which also gives his address at the time of Florence Villas, Lonsdale Road, Barnes, Surrey. Walter Williams was born in North London on the 29 November 1834 to the artist George Augustus Williams (1814-1901) and his wife Caroline Francis (nee Smith). He was part of the Williams family of artists founded by his grandfather Edward Williams (1781-1855). His uncles Edward Charles Williams (1807-1881), Henry John Boddington (1811-1865), Arthur Gilbert (1819-1895), Sidney Richard Percy (1821–1886) and Alfred Walter Williams (1824–1905) were all artists. He was christened George after his father, but later used his middle name to distinguish between the two. He lived with his family in Liverpool Street on the Grays Inn Road in London until around 1846 when they moved to Castlenau Villas in Barnes. Williams was taught by his father and may have also received guidance from other members of the Williams family including his Grandfather. His father worked out of neighbouring studios with his grandfather and uncles and Williams and his cousins often joined them there to paint. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1854 and went on to exhibit at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. On 27 June, 1857 he married Jane Pearcy (1832-1872) who was also an artist. They lived at 8 Lonsdale Terrace on Lonsdale Road in Barnes and went on to have two children, Florence and Cyril who inherited their parent’s talent. The house was renamed Florence Villa from 1870. After the death of his wife in 1872 he continued living in Lonsdale Road. Sometime around the late 1890’s he remarried and moved with his second wife Mary to 20 Lonsdale Road. Williams died in Richmond on 14 April, 1906. Examples of his work can be found at the Beverley Art Gallery and Hastings Museum Art Gallery. Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears an original handwritten label by the artist as well as an old a stock label for Frost Reed. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

19th century English Antique Victorian Summertime Harvest landscape, with figures. John Mundell was a British painter of landscapes as well as river scenes and coastal views. It is suggested that Mundell was a pseudonym of John James Wilson. Mundell’s work was vigorous, bright, and attractive and compares favorably with the work of many of the better artists of his time. This is a very fine example of the artist's work. It is a rare composition for the artist as he mostly painted marines. This piece is framed in its original antique gold leaf frame

English 19thC Victorian Shipping scene with fishing boats in the English Channel
By William Anslow Thornley
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honourable mention in 1881 and a third place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
