“The sea brings calm through its simplicity, yet it is a source of endless variety. The viewer should be able to step into or dive into the image.”
Willem Jan van Balen (b. 1973) paints the sea, the sky, and sometimes a stretch of beach. Raised in Oostvoorne on the coast, he feels deeply connected to the centuries-old Dutch tradition of depicting our timeless seas and skies—from stormy North Sea waves to crystal-clear surf and soft evening light.
After studying at the art academies in Tilburg and Rotterdam, he developed unique painting techniques and effects to convincingly capture space, light, and atmosphere. His choice of acrylic paint allows him to work quickly in layers while preserving the clarity and vibrancy of color, using fluid brushstrokes that bring his landscapes to life.
Willem Jan’s work combines technical mastery with a sense of presence, inviting the viewer to almost step into the sea and landscape itself.

Jenn painted this piece using Golden Open Acrylics, which take longer to dry and therefore allow for more blending time. Jenn uses this technique to give the painting a dreamy and hopeful essence. "I am more passionate than ever about painting peaceful, reflective art that provides serenity and beauty," she says. This piece was painted on Arches heavyweight paper and includes a 1 5/8" border around the edge for ease of framing.
