William Quinlan Torrey Cliff, Palisades, New Jersey, 1939 Signed and dated lower right; titled on reverse Oil on artist board 10 x 8 inches Private collection, New York c. 1955 Estate of the above, 2024 Will J. Quinlan, also known as William James Quinlan, 3rd, was an artist born in Brooklyn on June 27, 1877. He became deaf when he was young. He developed a passion for art early in life and studied at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, and Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn. He became skilled at etching, especially focused on city buildings, and he also enjoyed painting with oil paints. In 1913, he received the Black White Prize and, for two years in a row, 1913 and 1914, he won the Shaw Etching Prize from the Salmagundi Club in New York City. Quinlan's artwork is held in the permanent collections of places like the New York Public Library, the New York Historical Society, the Oakland Museum in California, the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, and the John H. Vanderpoel Art Gallery in Chicago. Two of his oil paintings are on loan from the Hudson River Museum and can be seen at Yonkers City Hall. The New York Historical Society has a large assortment of his etchings of New York City in its Print Collection. Quinlan passed away in Seattle, Washington on April 21, 1963.
