About the Item

Discover a powerful and atmospheric depiction of the American West in “Abandoned (Colorado),” an original oil painting by acclaimed 20th-century artist William Sanderson. This hauntingly beautiful piece features a solitary, weathered house nestled among lush, rolling hills, set beneath a vivid blue sky with drifting white clouds. The composition evokes both tranquility and quiet desolation, capturing the essence of Colorado’s wide-open landscapes with an emotional and modernist touch. Professionally presented in a custom frame, the painting measures 13 ¼ x 16 ½ inches overall, with the artwork itself measuring 8 ½ x 11 ¼ inches. About the Artist: William Sanderson (1905–1990) Born Wilhelm Tsiegelnitsky in Latvia, William Sanderson immigrated to the United States in 1923. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York, developing a versatile style that evolved from illustration and political art into a compelling form of American modernism. Sanderson served in WWII and settled in Colorado in 1942, where the striking landscapes became a central theme in his work. He was known for blending surrealism, stylized realism, and modernist techniques to portray the rugged beauty and emotional complexity of the American West. A beloved educator, Sanderson taught at the University of Denver from 1946 to 1972 and became a key figure in shaping the region’s contemporary art scene. His work has been exhibited in major institutions including the Denver Art Museum, A.C.A. Gallery in New York, and is held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others.
