This splendid mid-19th-century oil painting by English artists William Shayer (1787-1879) and Edward Charles Williams (1807-1881) depicts an assortment of travellers outside a roadside inn. It’s a fine example of their collaborative work.
At times, when leading artists collaborate, it can have the effect of bringing the best qualities out in both of them. Here, we see Williams’ effectiveness with views and architecture (he evidently worked first). The inn, with its tired thatch and partially-timbered facade, is gently illuminated from the left. While beyond, through a gap in foliage, a glimpse of a distant church is visible. As a landscape, it’s an accomplished work in itself, but with the addition of figures by Shayer, it’s brought to life.
Shayer’s specialism was as a figure painter, and there’s a George Morland-esque ruggedness to his portrayals. Note the expert handling of the white horse towards the centre and the ‘weight’ of the man rolling the barrel. He assisted various members of the Williams family, and it’s believed that his second wife, Elizabeth Waller, was somehow related.
A comparable piece, titled ‘An Old Roadside Inn, Kent’ sold at Bonhams in 2013, reaching £13,125.
Signed/dated in the lower left and held in a later frame.

19th-Century English Oil Painting, Cottage By The Cove With Donkeys, Family
By Edward William Cooke
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This idyllic late 19th-century oil painting by English artist Edward William Cooke RA (1811-1880) depicts a west-country cove with two cottages, donkeys, figures, and fishing boats. Cooke was a highly renowned painter of marine scenes and landscapes who exhibited extensively at London’s Royal Academy.
From our elevated vantage point, the view extends between two quaint cottages and across the beach before sweeping around the sandy coastline. Crystalline waters lap the shore, where moored craft rest. It’s an accomplished rendering of a challenging composition. It’s enhanced by trees, which essentially ‘frame’ the right side, while a wooded track provides interest on the left.
Cooke was a keen admirer of the Dutch old masters, and the spirit of the Golden Age underpins this splendid work. In diaries, he recorded how he travelled by donkey to access elevated spots in the southwest, so it’s conceivable that he did so here. In his catalogue raisonné, it lists a work from the same year titled ‘Bay with Donkeys’.
Born in Pentonville, London, Cooke was raised in the company of accomplished artists as both his father, George Cooke (1781-1834), and his uncle, William Bernard Cooke (1778-1855), were engravers. As such, they were associated with a circle of Victorian painters who aided Cooke’s early development. These included the highly regarded marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793-1867), who provided frequent advice and inspiration. Indeed, as a teenager, Cooke produced numerous drawings after Stanfield’s works.
A precocious talent, by the age of nine, he was already displaying an advanced understanding of engraving, particularly for ships, coupled with a natural, seemingly in-built skill as a draughtsman. Many of his early drawings depict pastoral landscapes after the masters, such as Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), Paulus Potter (1625-1654), and Karel Dujardin (1626-1678).
In an extraordinary turn of events, in 1820, his advanced abilities led to his first commission when he provided botanical illustrations for John Loudon's 'Encyclopaedia of Plants’. These were followed by drawings published in the 'Botanical Cabinet...

A Bustling Harbour Town
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863
Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches
Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches
A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour.
Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850).
Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...
