About the Item

A lovely American Impressionist landscape painted by William Wendt (1865-1946), one of California's best-known landscape painters. This painting has the signature use of rich greens and browns that Wendt became known for. It shows a winding dirt road lined by lush green grass and trees. Wendt was born in Germany and immigrated to Chicago in 1880, and settled in California in 1906. It was in California that he achieved artistic recognition and dedicated him self to painting nature in the style of the French Impressionists. He had a deep love of nature and untamed wilderness, and often sought out remote locations for silence and contemplation. Wendt was the founder of the California Art Club, an organization that reflected his commitment to plein-air painting of the California landscape. Wendt's work is in many collections, including the Union Club in Seattle, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pasadena Art Institute, and the Springville, Utah Museum. Presented in a beautiful gilt wood frame. Signed lower right "Wendt". Framed 22" x 18"
