About the Item

Wolf Kahn 1927-2020 American A Spot of Grass Signed "W Kahn" (lower right) Oil on canvas A masterwork of modern American landscape painting, A Spot of Grass exemplifies Wolf Kahn's revolutionary approach to color field painting and his ability to beautifully blend abstraction and realism in his depictions of the natural world. Created in 1988 during the height of the artist's mature period, this luminous canvas is one of Kahn's best, demonstrating his singular talent for merging European modernism with American landscape traditions. The composition presents a forest interior rendered in Kahn's signature palette of radiant purples, peaches, lavenders and subtle greens that seem to glow from within. Tree trunks tower across the canvas, their forms simplified yet powerful against the soft, pale orange forest floor. The artist's signature "foggy" effect is on full display here, with the warm gold of filtered sunlight penetrating the violet forest canopy. The titular "spot of grass" appears as a patch of luminous green that punctuates the forest floor, providing a burst of color as well as a metaphorical narrative to the painting. Wolf Kahn stands among the most significant American landscape painters of the late 20th century, celebrated for his unique synthesis of Abstract Expressionist color theory with plein air observation. Born in Germany and emigrating to America as a child, Kahn studied under Hans Hofmann, whose teachings on color relationships profoundly influenced his artistic development. Throughout his prolific career spanning over six decades, Kahn developed a distinctive visual language that captured the essential character of American landscapes through bold chromatic harmonies rather than literal representation. His works are held in the collections of major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
