About the Item
On a prominent hilltop in Wiltshire, there is a circular ring of trees known as Furze Knoll. It dominates the prehistoric landscape that lays between Marlborough and Stonehenge. It is an ethereal place so rich in mystery that you can easily imagine the fay living amongst the rooks, badgers and foxes It is a landscape where the artist Lee Tiller has lived for many years, and in this evocative painting, he invites us to reflect on the beauty and mystery of the sacred Wiltshire landscape. Rook Haven captures the atmospheric effects of a bright winter’s morning where a dusting of snow has settled on the frosty ground.
Tiller’s fascination with natural light is clear to see with his chromatic rendering of reflected sunlight. As he says, “snow is never ‘white’, but is the result of reflected light and adjacent colour. The painting by Pissarro known as ‘Hoar frost’ is a great example of this.” In Rook Haven, Tiller has employed delicate violet hues complemented with dusky pinks, soft greens and elegant yellows. Whilst his artistic style is firmly grounded in the tradition of the original French Impressionists, in this painting, the composition and colour are very much of a contemporary neo-impressionist approach.
Hidden with the brushstrokes are myriad colours that will surprise and confound, yet when viewed as a whole, form a harmonious effect like that of a musical composition. This landscape feels somewhat dreamlike with an ethereal quality, yet remains aesthetically familiar to us all, perhaps borne from a whisper of a long-forgotten memory. His paintings embody the essence of impressionism whilst evoking deep emotion and atmosphere. His landscapes often appear as if illuminated from within by sunlight, and like the original French impressionists, Lee is fascinated with light and its effects, and in this case its subtle diffusion through airborne moisture creating a silvery mist. Rook Haven will make a beautiful centre piece for any interior and is bound to be the subject of many conversations.
