About the Item
Michael Forster has a unique blend of Mexican symbolism and an approach to universal themes such as "Celestial Skies". This work explores both the mystery of nature and the bigger picture that we are living in this larger context of the universe. In this piece we see him using a focus of the sun within a deep rich sky. The purple tones almost convey a sense of space rather than the light blue sky we see during day. He utilizes a sponged technique of applying paint that creates a reverberation. This creates a pulsating effect which is both mesmerizing, inviting and mysterious at the same time. This is a composition which takes us out of ourselves and into a larger context.
The piece is signed with his monogram on the back along with a date of 1993. It also has its Inventory # 829A. The work has the provenance of estate of the artist and Messums Gallery in London. The canvas measures 34 x 44 inches inside the frame.
The frame is gold and has a rubbed patina with some disturbances. Could benefit from a more personal and new choice of frame.
In a room this work is transporting and expansive and would function very well. It would bring richness of color that is deep yet airy.
Forster was a frequent exhibitor with the major art societies already by the 1930’s with several of his paintings in the country’s major museum collections by the 1940’s, Michael Forster was captivated by celestial patterns in the space galaxies. Pre-dating the travels of the world’s astronauts, these rich abstract compositions captured the shifting face of the dark canopy of the universe. Such works are unique and place Forster in a class by himself. His passion for color as seen in our Emerging Sun, 1993 is also evident. As the German art historian Paul Westheim once remarked about Forster:
Colour is the medium of his expression, he has reduced all that is visible, all that is imaginable to colour, a strange and fantastic world of visionary colour. By means of colour, he knows how to give form to a whole range of emotions and feelings.
A proponent of early Surrealism Forster placed an emphasis on the unconscious life of the artist in his perceptive sensual application of paint. Forster’s further concern for the essence of paint itself led him to create mesmerizing surface textures that were deeply personal and filled with emotion.
This picture bears a close resemblance to Tamayo’s works, especially through the all-enveloping, deep, full, and impressive array of color. In this celestial landscape composition Forster has reduced all visible images to the fantastical world of color. This highly refined and extremely disciplined abstract work boasts luminous and vibrant deep purple as well as dynamic and spellbinding blue passages of differing hues that resonate across the canvas and create a luster that is illustrative of the limitless universe that is lit by a sole yellow glowing orb. Forster’s further concern for his chosen paint material has resulted in fantastic surfaces that incorporate the artist’s feelings, nostalgic remembrances, and emotions. This richness of color coupled with the artist’s dexterous handling of paint make our picture a truly spectacular example of Michael Forster’s work and place Forster as a stand-out amongst his contemporaries.
