About the Item

Antonio Zanchi (Este, Italy, 1631 – Venice, Italy, 1722) Title: Prometheus Bound Year: 1655-1660 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 188 × 146 cm – with frame 194 x 152 x 4.2 cm Not signed Expertise by Martina Leone, art historian Provenance: Previously part of the Pio Falcò Collection Antonio Zanchi (1631-1722) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period who was mainly active in Venice, Italy. He trained in Venice, and was deeply influenced by Luca Giordano (1634-1705) and Giovanni Battista Langetti (1635-1676). He became a prominent tenebrist and established himself as a painter of large-scale religious canvases. The subject of this beautiful canvas is Prometheus, a Titan chained to a cliff by Zeus, because accused of stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humanity. The punishment Prometheus was condemned to, for stealing from the gods, was eternal torment. The painting depicts Prometheus bound to a rock while an eagle – the emblem of Zeus - hovers overhead, ready to tear out his liver and leave him in perpetual torment. The naked figure of the hero is revealed in an exaggerated twist, projected diagonally into space, with limbs stretched out and wrists chained, in a state of physical and psychological tension of great violence. The monumentality of the male body and the use of grazing light that sculpts its volumes reveal a Prometheus who is a symbol of political struggle: between justice and possibility, the guilty and the condemned. The attribution of the painting to Antonio Zanchi is well founded both stylistically and in terms of the compositional invention of the canvas, despite the fact that Prometheus iconography is rare in 17th-century Venice.
