About the Item
Wild (2015) by French contemporary artist Christophe Dupety. Oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm.
In this series simply entitled "Nus" (nudes), the artist is superimposing and juxtaposing two images. On one hand a brightly colored painting, of abstract motifs or evoking vegetation through sharp and vigorous brushstrokes. On the other an enigmatic portrait of a nude man and his mirrored reflection. This man (the artist himself?) seated on the floor in a room with grey, bare walls, appears to be considering his reflection in a pose that is alternately cautious (as if to be discovering himself for the first time) and calm.
With this series of introspective paintings the artist is looking to provoke an echo in the viewer getting him to question the relationship between the artist and his work, the bond between man and his body or his environment, the effect of time… Each painting contains the artist's pictorial vocabulary: the liveliness of his gesture (the canvas is printed with brushstrokes) and his ability to compose with "accidents" (spattering, dribbling, dripping…) which "can impart on the work something of the order of energy, joy, the unexpected."

Christophe Dupety’s paintings express the vitality and spontaneity of gesture, free of all interference. For the artist, these can be used in a way that contributes to what he wants us to see: the joy of painting. An artist who favours a form of painting that can be read immediately, Christophe Dupety seeks to encourage a spontaneous emotional response in the viewer. “I always try to emphasise the joy of painting in my work: colour, shape and fluidity, and above all a sort of graphic challenge in which things always seem spontaneous and graphic in any case, because drawing has always been very important for me.’’
