About the Item

The Triumph of Eros over Pan Florentine School, early 1700's period, unsigned oil on canvas, framed framed: 58 x 48.5 inches canvas: 50 x 40 inches Provenance: private collection, Paris, France Condition: very good condition - small scratch shown in photos This museum quality 1700's Old Master oil painting depicts the mythological scene referred to as 'Eros over Pan'. In this scene, Eros stands proudly, arms raised in victory, facing Pan, who is kneeling, head bowed, his thyrse, the symbol of his membership in the Dionysian procession, abandoned at his feet. This Pan-Eros opposition illustrates the ancient struggle between divine love, represented by Eros, and profane love, embodied by Pan. Eros, in an act of conquest, tries to seize Pan's reed flute, an instrument that echoes the story of Syrinx, the muse transformed into reeds to escape the god's grasp. There is also an allusion to the painting's background, highlighting Pan's assaults on Syrinx. This confrontation is a recurring allegory in ancient art, where the tension between the divine purity of love and the bestiality of carnal love unfolds.
