Work Description
An imposing and serene female nude in a seated position, executed with the refined academic technique that distinguished Francisco Ribera Gómez. The figure, partially draped in a mauve cloth that contrasts with the neutral background, conveys introspection and delicacy. To the left, a green glass bottle provides a compositional and chromatic counterpoint. The light, directed with precision, caresses the model’s skin and shapes the volumes with a soft realism, characteristic of the Spanish figurative tradition of the mid-20th century.
Condition Report
The work is in good overall condition, with the canvas firm and well-stretched on its original stretcher. It shows fine and stable craquelure throughout the surface, more pronounced along the entire lower band and the lower right edge, where a possible earlier restoration with chromatic reintegration and partial varnishing is visible. These interventions have aged differently, producing slight variations in gloss and texture compared to the rest of the painting. No active flaking or structural damage is observed. The varnish shows light oxidation and a slightly yellowish tone, which could be improved with professional cleaning.
Artist Biography
Francisco Ribera Gómez was one of the most recognized Spanish painters of the postwar period. Born in Madrid in 1907, he trained in the workshop of his father, painter José Ribera Blázquez, and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he was influenced by masters such as Romero de Torres, Inurria, and Moreno Carbonero. He won awards at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1928 and 1930 and developed a prominent career as a poster artist and illustrator before settling in Barcelona, where he served as professor and later director of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi.
His production focused on portraiture, the nude, and the female figure, achieving great popularity thanks to the widespread distribution of his works in calendars between 1947 and 1977. He was a member of several Spanish and foreign academies and received international distinctions in Paris, Brussels, and Italy. He died in Málaga in 1990.
