This intimate painting depicts a reclining nude lady in the grass, with a few brushstrokes of blue in the background indicating that she is lounging by a river bed. The lady's body is full and curvaceous, with the Impressionist emphasis on utilising colour to indicate light changes emphasising the voluptuous shape of her body. The warm cooler tones used to depict her skin contrast with the warm and vibrant tones used for the water and grass. Additionally, the relatively undetailed background features ensure that the focus of the image is the languid nude in the centre.
There is a true sense of sensuous intimacy and love within this image, which is accentuated with the fact that Ottmann was known to use his wife for modelling his nude paintings. Maybe, then, the white drapery over her groin is perhaps a husbandly attempt to preserve her most intimate modesty.
Henri Ottmann
Born in Ancenis in Loire-Atlantique in 1877, Ottmann began his artistic career as a painter and printmaker in Brussels at the beginning of the 20th century. He began his studies in 1896 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, but was interrupted the following year when mandatory military service in the 64th Infantry Regiment forced Ottmann to return to Ancenis. Abhorring military life, Ottmann faked his own drowning in the Loire. Whilst on the run, he survived by painting and selling unsigned work. It was also during this fugitive period that he met and married Marianne Capron, with the two of them fleeing to Belgium. It was in Brussels that Ottmann’s first exhibition took place, at the Salon La Libre Esthetique in 1904.
Shortly after this, Ottmann and his wife did return to France, where he subsequently participated in prestigious exhibitions such as the Salon des Independants in Paris from 1905, the Salon d’Automne, the Salon Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Tuileries.
Despite this success at the Salons, Ottmann’s early career was marked by extreme financial difficulties. As a result, his formative years as an artist were spent painting works that appealed to collectors and commercial galleries, rather than developing his own distinct style. As he gained more success, this individual style did develop, particularly in relation to still life paintings which, alongside nude paintings, are the subject matter Ottmann is most renowned for.
Ottmann’s oeuvre before the First World War was heavily influenced by the French Impressionist movement, particularly the works of Renoir, and he often exhibited within this artistic circle of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and Fauves. In 1911 and 1912, Ottmann exhibited at the Artiste de la Société Moderne at the Gallery of the French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. Durand-Ruel represented many prominent French Impressionist painters, including Armand Guillaumin and Henri Lebasque. In 1912, he also exhibited at the Galerie of Eugene Druet, a French photographer and art dealer whose gallery had exhibited works from Georges Pissarro, Charles Camoin, Albert Marquet, Maurice Denis and Paul Cezanne.
At the outbreak of the war, Ottmann was registered as a conscientious objector. Instead of a combatant role, he worked as a nurse for a military hospital in Ancenis - intriguingly, many of his fellow nurses were his portrait clients and patrons. During the years of conflict, he continued to produce art and hosted an exhibition at Druet’s gallery in 1917.
From 1919, Ottmann was involved in creating woodcut illustrations for the ‘Drawings and Signed Wood’ section in the Nantes-based literary and artistic magazine La Gerbe. These illustrations were displayed among others by Impressionist artists such as Paul Signac and Henriette Tirman. In the early 1920s, Ottmann exhibited at the Marcel Bernheim Gallery and the Exposition du Cercle Artistique de Bruzelles, with the latter exhibition displaying his works alongside those of Charles Guerin, Henri Matisse, Paul-Abert Besnard and Andre Lhote. Ottmann continued to exhibit to great success, enjoying shows at L. Dru and La Palette Francaise in 1926, and the Galerie Armand Drouand in 1927. His works were even exhibited as far away as Beirut, New York, Detroit, Buenos Aires, and Tokyo.
Tragically, Ottmann’s life was cut short in a car accident in Vermon in 1927. Driving to an exhibition of his works in Rouen, a burst tire caused his car to roll over in which Ottmann suffered a fractured skull and spine. After being transported in a coma to a clinic in Vernon, Ottmann tragically passed from his injuries at the young age of 49 years old. If Ottmann had not been involved in this tragedy, it is likely that his artworks and distinct style would have earned him a deservedly high reputation.
Nonetheless, Ottmann’s works can be found in many French Museums, including the Modern Museum and the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. A number of his works were destroyed during the Second World War, particularly his works in collections in Berlin, Hamburg and Nagasaki. Subsequently, the conflicts in the Middle East destroyed a large portion of Ottmann’s oeuvre, held in Beirut by collector Mr Charles Corm. Ottmann’s surviving works are largely in private collections, and are very rarely seen or sold.

James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year.
From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. However, much of his later work was abstract. In 1971, his former student, Peter Coker...

A unique drawing, this work is typical of Brodzky's early nudes with its economy in the use of the line and the seemingly relaxed, informal pose of the model. The spontaneous feel of many of Brodsky's drawings does in a way indicate that the works, such as the present drawing, are purely sketches and studies. In fact, Brodsky was known for making perhaps twenty or thirty drawings at a sitting and of those he preserved perhaps only a handful, only those that 'pass his rigorous censorship sum up qualities resulting from the perfect collaboration of hand and eye and sensibility' (Forty Drawings by Horace Brodsky, by James Laver, 1935, p.15).
Laver continued to write that 'Brodsky preferred a pose that showed the body from an unexpected angle, daringly foreshortened or with the weight of the various parts freed from the monotony of the standing pose. He liked to see his models from above, the limbs relaxed, and.... he made many of his drawings from a step-ladder drawn up close to the platform on which the model is lying'.
Horace Brodsky
Horace Ascher Brodzky (30 January 1885 – 11 February 1969) was an Australian-born artist and writer most of whose work was created in London and New York. His work included paintings, drawings and linocuts, of which he was an early pioneer. An associate in his early career of many leading artists working in Britain of his period, including Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Mark Gertler, and members of the Vorticism movement, he ended his life relatively neglected.
Brodzky was born in Kew, Melbourne in 1885 to the Australian journalist Maurice Brodzky (a Jewish immigrant to Australia from Poland), and his wife Flora, née Leon. In his youth he assisted his father in the production of the magazine Table Talk.
Brodzky studied initially at the National Gallery School in Melbourne. In 1904 his father was bankrupted after exposing corruption, and Horace moved with his family to San Francisco.
In 1908, Brodzky went to London where he studied during 1911 at the City and Guilds South London Technical Art School. He became an acquaintance and follower of Walter Sickert. Amongst his friends was Henri Gaudier-Brzeska who created in 1913 a portrait bust of Brodzky (now in the Tate Gallery, London), and whose biography he wrote in 1933. Brodzky is said to have been so engrossed in talk when he visited Gaudier-Brzeska's studio in the King's Road, that he missed the last bus to Herne Hill where he lived.
Brodzky travelled to Italy with the poet John Gould Fletcher and this led to his first London exhibition, "Paintings and Sketches of Italian and Sicilian Scenes" (c. 1911), of which one painting was selected for the 1912 Venice Biennale. He was in fact the first Australian to be exhibited at the Biennale. In 1914 his work was exhibited along with that of other Jewish artists, including Mark Gertler and David Bomberg, in the Whitechapel Gallery. Brodzky became a member of The London Group. During this period he was a pioneer of the technique of linocut, in which medium he has been said to have "excelled". His early oils reveal the influence of both Gertler and Bomberg. Among his works of this period are portraits of Jacob Epstein and Jacob Kramer.
In 1915 Brodzky moved to New York, with an introduction to the art patron John Quinn. There he worked as a poster artist and an arts journalist, and in 1917 helped Quinn organize a New York exhibition of Vorticist artists. In 1919 he married Bertha Greenfield; they were to have three sons. In 1920 Egmont Arens...
