About the Item

“A Moment of Summer” is a contemporary figurative painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot, part of her ongoing series dedicated to Women — a theme she has been exploring for several years. Through this series, Mougenot does not seek to define womanhood through roles or appearances, but to express feminine presence as lived experience: emotional, intuitive, vulnerable, and strong. The painting captures a fleeting yet powerful moment. A female figure stands with her arms raised, her posture open and relaxed, fully inhabiting her body. The face is intentionally undefined, allowing the image to remain universal. This is not a portrait of a specific woman, but a reflection of woman as a state of being — present, free, and connected to herself. The body becomes a vessel of sensation rather than an object of representation. At the heart of the work lies the artist’s long-standing exploration of woman as an inner landscape. As Natalya Mougenot explains: “Women are not a subject for me — they are a space of emotion, memory, and transformation.” The canvas becomes a place where these inner states surface naturally, without constraint. The second central idea of the painting is the summer moment itself — a time the artist treats almost as a life apart. Summer is depicted not simply as a season, but as a symbolic interval where time feels suspended and emotions are intensified. Mougenot captures that instant we wish to live fully and remember, knowing it will not last. As she says: “Summer is like a separate life. Everything feels more intense, more alive, more essential.” In" A Moment of Summer", this idea unfolds subtly. Summer becomes a space where we leave behind the weight of past difficulties, where the body relaxes and the mind breathes. It is a time to fully enjoy the present — light on the skin, warmth, freedom — while simultaneously allowing ourselves to dream of a brighter future. “During summer, we unconsciously let go of what was heavy,” Mougenot reflects. “We live the present more freely, and we dare to dream again.” Natalya Mougenot’s intuitive and spontaneous approach is clearly visible in the painting. She works without preparatory sketches and paints in one continuous session, allowing the emotion of the moment to guide the composition. “I paint in one setting. The canvas keeps the trace of a precise emotional moment — it cannot be recreated later.” Color plays a fundamental role in transmitting these sensations. Soft flesh tones are infused with blues, violets, pinks, and touches of yellow, creating a vibration that evokes sunlight, air, and movement. For Mougenot, color is inseparable from emotion: “Color carries energy. It is how I translate feeling into something visible.” Authenticity and honesty remain at the core of her practice. The visible brushstrokes and the absence of detail preserve the truth of the gesture and the moment. “A canvas always reflects the personality of the artist,” she affirms. “You cannot hide behind technique — people immediately feel what is true.” Finally, Mougenot sees her work as a form of positive transmission, especially when art enters personal spaces: “People live with art. They hang it in their homes. What matters to me is that my paintings bring light, balance, and positive energy into their everyday life.” "A Moment of Summer" embodies this intention, radiating warmth, freedom, and emotional openness. Rooted in a metamodernist sensibility, the painting balances vulnerability and strength, memory and presence, reflection and hope. A Moment of Summer is a celebration of womanhood and of that suspended time we all long to experience — a moment where we honor the past, embrace the present, and allow ourselves to believe in a luminous future.
