About the Item
Gossamer
In Gossamer, the body appears almost weightless, held delicately within a field of shadow. The painting emphasizes fragility—of skin, of memory, of presence itself. Hall’s brushwork alternates between precision and dissolution, reinforcing the sense that the figure is both fully there and already receding.
Nathan Brad Hall's work comes together in this show to build an undeniably jaw dropping experience for viewers. “Undercurrents,” says Hall, “is about trying to find a way to capture the underlying layers of emotion and have that emotion resonate outwards. It’s the hum of electricity just below the surface, pulsing and cracking, that influences the way we move about in the world.” Based in New York and known for his large-scale figure paintings, Hall’s work offers glimpses into the intensity and vulnerability of being human. He says, "working at a sizable scale allows the viewer to become enveloped in the figure's deep humanity."
Hall's monumentally scaled work is defined by his use of dramatic lighting. In each work, he illuminates specific areas of the figure and their surroundings as the rest fades away into deep shadows. While Hall's work displays his knowledge and technique with painting realism, bits and pieces of texture pop out throughout the body of work. Highlights of selectively placed thickly painted marks bring his work to a whole new level of depth. The selective marks reward viewers as they view the work up close, until they fade into the image from afar. Hall states, "Using both expressive and refined brush strokes of various thickness, my work uses the physical nature of oil paint to explore the balance of energy and stillness that can make the human figure come alive."
Nathan Brad Hall lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. With a background in both abstract and figurative studies, his focus today is on figurative oil painting, attempting to capture the light that illuminates us all. He has shown his work extensively in group and solo exhibitions in NYC and beyond and can be found in private collections across the U.S. and internationally.

View AllElsewhere - Large Scale Portrait of a Woman, Original Oil Painting
Located in Chicago, IL
Elsewhere
Elsewhere suggests psychological distance rather than physical removal. The figure’s posture conveys withdrawal, introspection, and quiet resistance. Hall’s restraint is notable here—nothing is exaggerated, yet the emotional weight is unmistakable. The darkness presses close, amplifying the sense of inward retreat.

Day Break - Nude Figure From Above, Original Oil Painting
Located in Chicago, IL
Day Break
Here, light enters as a quiet revelation rather than a dramatic intrusion. The figure is caught in a private moment, his gaze inward, as if emerging from sleep or introspection. The painting recalls Caravaggio’s restraint in late works, where illumination becomes softer, more contemplative. Flesh tones are handled with remarkable subtlety, allowing emotion to surface through posture rather than expression.

Threshold - Large Scale Oil Painting of a Nude Seated on a Green Chaise Lounge
Located in Chicago, IL
Threshold
A solitary male figure sits at the edge of illumination, his body poised between tension and stillness. The composition suggests a psychological crossing—an interior threshold rather than a physical one. The dramatic light sculpts the torso with almost classical clarity, while the surrounding darkness destabilizes any sense of place. This work exemplifies Hall’s interest in moments of becoming, where identity feels provisional and unresolved.

-ARTIST STATEMENT-
I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis
personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my
narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I
use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered
reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art
historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an
Everyman who is at odds with society and his self.
Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its
overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their
tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow
seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid.
This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world
through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light.
-BIO-
Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey...
