About the Item
Signed lower right "Sears" for Richard Sears (American, 1924-2013) and dated 1960.
A substantial, Expressionist style figural oil showing a partially-draped woman seated at a dressing-table and brushing her hair with an expression of absorbed self-reflection. An eloquent and intuitive mid-century work painted with a bravura brush in muted tones of ocher, rust and gold.
Born in southern California, Richard Sears demonstrated an aptitude for draftsmanship at an early age. Following his service in Africa and Europe during the Second World War, Sears studied under the GI Bill, completing graduate work at the University of Iowa and earning an MFA from the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1953, he joined the faculty of the University of Michigan as instructor in drawing and painting, advancing to full professor and retiring in 1989. After retirement, he moved to Maine and returned to being a full-time artist.
