About the Item

Yves Fournier (1917-2016) Académie, Young man posing, oil on canvas 46 x 38 cm Inscribed "Y Fournier" on the back of the canvas Framed 50 x 42 cm Provenance : Estate of the artist The French word 'académie' refers to works of art, most often drawings but also paintings, depicting the human form. The term 'académie' originated from its imposition as an essential stage in the learning process by the Royal Academy of Painting. Studying anatomy and the different poses of the human body was important not only for training artists, but also for demonstrating their technical mastery throughout their careers. These academic nudes also became works of art in their own right, valued for their aesthetic qualities and sometimes collected. Found mainly in 19th-century art, this type of work became less common with the advent of Impressionism and the rejection of academicism. Therefore, it is particularly interesting to find a more 'modern' academic work here. This academic painting by Yves Fournier has all the traditional characteristics of this type of work. It retains its character as a study and sketch, with particular emphasis on parts of the model's body that interested the artist, such as the torso, and much less emphasis on others, such as the model's left hand, which is barely sketched. The edges of the canvas are also unpainted. Interestingly, this study from life provides an opportunity to create a true portrait of his model, which he depicts in vivid detail. It is both a sketch and a piece of work that was deliberately left unfinished in order to conform to the aesthetic principles of the academy. Yves Fournier (1917–2016) was a French artist. He was particularly interested in depicting horse races, following in the footsteps of Raoul Dufy and Gen Paul. He also devoted himself to landscape painting, drawing inspiration from the Loiret, Île de Ré, and Île d'Oléron.

Maurice Milliere (1871-1946) An artist in his studio, oil on canvas signed
By Maurice Milliere
Located in Paris, FR
Maurice Milliere (1871-1946) An artist in his studio, signed lower right oil on canvas 46 x 27 cm framed : 52 x 33 cm It is particularly interesting to find Maurice Millière working in a genre very different from that for which he is best known: depictions of young Parisian women. This unique portrait shows Millière in a more original and intriguing light. It captures a painter in his studio, creating a scene with various details: canvases on the floor to the right, a stretcher frame on trestles and even shoes that must have been quite striking at the time. The painter appears to be taking a break to smoke and pose for Millière. There is a real sense of complicity between the two artists. At the same time, however, everything in this painting is carefully chosen and composed, such as the admirable red background against which the model stands out. Combining elements of both a portrait and a studio scene, the painter's intention was to create a unique piece that pays homage to the bond between the two artists. Maurice Georges Louis Millière was born in Le Havre in 187. He came from a working-class family in Le Havre; his father was a salesman for a merchant. Millière began by studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre. He moved to Paris in 1889 and enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs, also attending certain workshops at the École des Beaux-Arts. His first notable graphic works were posters and sheet music for companies such as Le Boulch and Le Divan Japonais (1899). From 1917 onwards, he published large numbers of depictions of scantily clad women: first in Fantasio (1917), then in Bagatelles, La Vie parisienne, Le Frou-frou, Le Sourire, Le Gai-Paris, etc. At the end of 1920, he joined the République de Montmartre, a charitable association. Contemporary with those of Louis Icart, his “little women” were to enjoy great success outside France: during the 1920s, American periodicals reprinted his creations, as well as those of Suzanne Meunier and Georges Léonnec...

"The Artist as a Young Man" - Ashcan School Artist Figurative Oil Painting
By Hal Frater
Located in Carmel, CA
Hal Frater (American, 1909-2008) "The Artist as a Young Man" 1950 Oil paint on canvas, stretcher bars The artist signed the bottom right and the back of the painting. Framed Dimensions: 25" x 19" x 1.5" Hal Frater's "The Artist as a Young Man" is a striking piece that captures the essence of the artist himself, rendered in a raw, emotive style. The palette is earthy, with natural browns and creams contrasted against subdued blues and hints of muted red, evoking a sense of both the mundane and the profound. Frater's use of color and form reflects a contemplative mood, a moment of introspection. The artist's gaze is direct and unflinching, suggesting resilience and a deep inner life. This mid-20th-century piece, evocative of American Realism, offers a personal narrative, exploring themes of identity and self-perception. About the Artist: Hal Frater was not just an artist, but a storyteller who left us on February 3, 2008, on the cusp of his 99th birthday. His fifty-year tenure as a commercial artist was a testament to his adaptability and appeal. Yet it was in his private studio where Frater’s true passion lay, painting not for clients, but for his own soul's expression. His work, always striving to capture the nuances of the human spirit, reflected his sharp observational skills. His artistry was honed not in formal schools but alongside his peers in spontaneous gatherings, painting from life, sharing techniques and critiques that fueled their collective growth. Influenced by the likes of Jack Levine, Raphael Soyer, John Sloan, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh, and Phillip Reisman...
