Joseph Raskin painted still lifes throughout his career, often using them for formal and technical experimentation. Here, the artist renders a bouquet of a wide variety of flowers in a white vase, in the background the artist places a mirror where the floral arrangement is reflected in it. The artist's choice of colors is vibrant, creating contrast between the subject, and the background in the composition.
Joseph Raskin was a painter, etcher, teacher, and writer and co-author with his wife, Edith, of 10 books for young adults.
Mr. Raskin studied at the National Academy of Design, which awarded him several fellowships for his work. He was a member of the American Artist's Congress; Woodstock Artists Association; Audubon Artists; Artists Equity Association, NYC. He exhibited at the Salons of American Artists, 1925; Society of Independent Artists, 1930; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Annual, 1930, 1936, 1938, 1939; Association American Artists, 1945 (WPA era); Corcoran Gallery biennials, 1935, 1937; and in many galleries during those years including the Schervee Gallery, Boston in 1927, Tricker Gallery in 1939, the Schneider-Gabriel Gallery in 1941, Steinway Hall in 1942, and the American Artists Association in 1945. His awards include a European scholarship, National Academy of Design, 1921; Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, 1921. His paintings and etchings have been exhibited in galleries and institutions here and in Israel, including the New-York Historical Society, the New York Public Library, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art and National Academy of Design, both in Washington, D.C. the Department of Labor Building, Washington DC, the Smithsonian Museum and several universities.

Illustration for the Saturday Evening Post. The illustration depicts a man being booted off the ship. "Mr. Gallup Delivers the Goods" story was written by Norman Reilly Raine for the January 11, 1947 issue of Saturday Evening Post.
The marine paintings by Anton Otto Fischer are as authoritative as only a working sailor could make them. Born in Munich, Germany but orphaned as a boy, Fischer ran away to sea at 16 and spent eight years before the mast on a variety of sailing ships. Paid off in New York, he stayed to apply for American citizenship and to teach seamanship on the school ship, "St. Mary's." He later served as a hand on racing yachts on Long Island Sound and worked as a model and handyman for the illustrator A.B. Frost. When he had saved enough money, he spent two years at the Academie Julian in Paris under Laurens.
Returning to the United States, Fischer sold his first picture to Harper's Weekly in 1908, around the time he moves to Wilmington to receive critiques from Pyle. Everybody's magazine sent him the first of several Jack London stories. In 1910, he began a 48-year association with The Saturday Evening Post, which included illustrating seialized characters such as Peter B. Kyne's "Crappy Ricks," Norman Reilly Raine's "Tugoat Annie," Guy Gilpatrick's "Glencannon," as well as serials for Kenneth Robert...

Raymond Breinin, Russian/American painter & designer (1910-2000), was born in Vitebsk, Russia, where he commenced his art studies with Uri Pen (who was also the first teacher of Marc Chagall) and later attended the Vitebsk Academy of Art where Malevitch was the director. He came to the United States with his family in 1922. When he came to America he attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.
A painter of murals for the WPA, he was invited to join the Downtown Gallery in New
York City, one of the foremost galleries at the time, where he exhibited in one man shows and group shows over a period of 18 years. The winner of numerous major prizes at the Chicago Art Institute and other museums, he also won the $1000 purchase prize at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Artists for Victory" exhibition. He designed the sets and costumes for Anthony Tudor's ballet, "Undertow" produced by the American Ballet Theater. Helen Clark Oldfield was born in Santa Rosa. Her father, James E. Clark, invested in local hops farms. He was a director of the first Santa Rosa Bank.
Oldfield lived at 547 Mendocino Avenue, in one of the finest custom-built homes in town. She was the oldest child of the family. They spent summers in their beach cabin at Jenner-by-the-Sea.
She was a good student and graduated from DeWitt Montgomery High in Santa Rosa with college standard grades. Unfortunately, this idyllic situation tumbled down suddenly. due to a fraud scandal at the Bank, her father forfeited most of his assets in order to make good on his client's losses.
At the time when her high school friends were going east to college, Oldfield followed her family to a new life of farming. She found this life frustrating as there was little time for her interests after conclusion of her daily duties. Here she developed her natural gift for sophisticated needle work. At the time she also took a correspondence course in industrial design and became an expert tailor.
Her family was not happy with the farming arrangement. They decided to move to Oakland. In 1921 they purchased a home at 318...

Studied between 1928 and 1929 at the Free School of Painting and Drawing in Cracow , from 1929 to 1934 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw : painting by Mieczysław Kotarbiński and Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski and graphic art by Władysław Skoczylas and Leon Wyczółkowski . During his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw he worked in the Association of Independent Socialist Youth "Życie".
At the end of 1945, Helena and Juliusz Krajewscy lived in Warsaw. Helena Krajewska participated in the creation of the first Polish Fine Arts Association. Krajewscy became members of the PPR party organization at the Fine Arts Association.
In 1947 she became the President of the Board of the Warsaw District of the Union of Polish Artists , and in 1948 the Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party at the ZPAP.
In December 1985, an exhibition of works by Helena and Juliusz Krajewski took place in Warsaw's Zacheta. After 1989 some of the paintings of the Krajewski were transferred to the gallery of socialist realist art of the Zamoyski Museum in Kozłówka.
