Ellen Ladell British, (1853-1912) Still Life of Fruit & Exotic Birds Oil on canvas laid on board, signed Image size: 17.5 inches x 13.5 inches Size including frame: 24.75 inches x 20.75 inches Provenance: Sotheby’s The British Sale, 2003, lot 256 A beautifully painted still life of fruit with a glass dome and taxidermy birds by Ellen Ladell. Grapes, plums and a peach are shown grouped on a floral patterned green cloth at the front of a marble topped table. Behind the fruit is a large glass display dome with an arrangement of exotic taxidermy birds. The reflection in the glass gives the viewer a glimpse of a tall window with a house beyond, adding another dimension to the painting. Ellen Ladell was born Ellen Maria Levett in Ipswich in 1853 to George and Maria Levett. Her father was a foundry smith and the family lived at 30 Borough Road in Ipswich. She initially worked as a Milliner around 1871 but sought artistic training during her spare time. It is at this point she met and became a pupil of the still life painter Edward Ladell (1821-1886), who at that time was a widower. Ellen married Edward in Great Yarmouth on 21 October, 1878. The couple initially moved to Torquay where they had their son Kenwyn in 1880, but then decided to settle in Exeter, living at 99 Sidwell Street and setting up a studio at 20 Queen Street. This Italian landscape is an oil on canvas, framed behind glass in its original gallery frame, by Susan Isabel Dacre. A superb painting, painted circa 1888. Dacre was an early member of the Feminist movement and a member of the Manchester arts community. She travelled with Lord Leighton and exhibited widely. This work shows influences of early British impressionism. The painting depicts an Italian landscape with a road sweeping around a hill with dwellings and trees. The brushwork and palette are superb. Susan Isabel Dacre (1844 – 1933) was an English female artist of the Victorian era. She was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, and was educated in Salford. For the decade of 1858–68 she lived in Paris. After a winter in Italy (1869), she returned to Paris, and was present during the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. She returned to England in 1871 and began studying art at the Manchester School of Art, where she won the Queen's Prize in 1875. She began a lifelong friendship with fellow artist Annie Swynnerton; the two women pursued their art studies in Rome and Paris between 1874 and 1880. Around 1872, Lord Leighton dictated notes and observations on his methods of painting and composing his pictures to Susan Dacre during a stay on the island of Capri. Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo).
