Oil on Canvas. Signed at right, mid-canvas.
It is a portrait of a mourning woman, a young widow, as can be inferred, not only from the black dress, but rather from the headdress and especially the cameo with a male portrait, which she wears hanging around her neck.
Achille Zo was a French artist (from Bayonne, a Pyrenean town that was culturally influenced by the Basque Country) , who although he stayed repeatedly in Paris and Bordeaux, where he was artistically trained, later made several trips to Spain, both to Madrid (in 1856) and Andalusia (1860) , producing works with historical subjects or Spanish genre scenes for several years.
In the late 1960s, he turned instead to Orientalism. Several portraits are also in his production.
The painting offered here, in first canvas, is presented in a beautiful coeval frame from the second half of the 19th century.
