About the Item

Circle of Adam Frans van der Meulen (Brussels 1632 – Paris 1690) Equestrian portrait with battle scene in the background Oil on canvas? 81 x 103 cm.?In frame 105 x 124 cm. The centre of the composition is occupied by the equestrian portrait of a young knight, who looks directly at the observer with a proud expression, dressed in a dark military parade uniform with red details and a plumed hat. The leader is riding a dark bay horse, depicted in a dynamic and impetuous pose, a classic motif in equestrian iconography symbolising power and dominion. He is holding a flintlock pistol, a weapon of great value in 17th-century France, which became a symbol of prestige and military power, especially during the reign of the “Sun King”. In the background, army troops are preparing for battle, with ranks of soldiers on horseback adding a narrative and historical-military context to the scene. The work uses the rhetoric of royal power to show the subject in a context of command and military prestige. The style of the painting therefore fits into the genre of celebratory equestrian portraiture, common between the 17th and 18th centuries, which emphasises the status and authority of the subject. Although the exact identity of the commander is uncertain, the painting shares stylistic and thematic similarities with works by Italian and Flemish masters of the period. The painting in question is the work of an artist from the circle of Adam Frans van der Meulen (Brussels 1632 – Paris 1690), a French Baroque painter of Flemish origin who specialised in war scenes, and probably depicts a general in Louis XIV's army. The great popularity of this artist is linked to the commission entrusted to him by Louis XIV, King of France, as court painter during numerous wars and battles fought by France, including the War of Devolution (1667–1668) for possession of the Netherlands, then under Spanish rule. Commissioned by the Sun King, he travelled with the army and thus became an eyewitness to these events, in order to immortalise the monarch's military glories in painting: the works he produced were then placed in various royal residences and donated to the highest ranks of the army. Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...

Portrait Philip V King Rigaud Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743) Circle Portrait of Philip V, King of Spain (Versailles 1683 - Madrid 1746) Oil on canvas 72 x 59 cm - framed 87 x 74 cm. The painting examined here, depicting King Philip V of Spain (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), is to be placed in the circle of the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), one of the most significant portrait painters of his time and a great interpreter of the French school. This is a work of excellent pictorial quality: note the rendering of the facial features and the sharpness of the contours emphasised by the light. The face is characterised by chiaroscuro passages that verisimilarly reproduce light and its effects, rendered with great skill. Philip V wears a black satin costume with a sword at his side, he wears the stiff white Spanish collar and at the same time wears the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Habsburg Order of the Golden Fleece: this bringing together of the two main orders of France and Spain announced the possibility of a union between the two crowns. In Spanish costume, this effigy is nevertheless fully in line with the French tradition of ceremonial portraiture, also testifying to the renewal that Rigaud had brought about, particularly through the relationship between the character and the splendour of the decoration. The work is inspired, reworked in a reduced format to make it suitable for a private clientele, by the large painting that Rigaud made for the sovereign around 1700, today conserved in the Louvre, reproduced by the same workshop in numerous other versions. The account books...
