About Artist
Ademola Ajayi (b. 1996, Oyo, Nigeria) is a contemporary Nigerian artist whose practice combines oil colours, pencil drawing, and vibrant Ankara fabrics to create powerful expressionist works. A graduate of Fine and Applied Art, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, and Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo (2019, 2024), Ademola has developed a unique mixed-media style that bridges drawing and textile traditions.
His work often explores Yoruba cultural heritage, using everyday symbols and traditions as visual language to reflect on identity, memory, and personal experience. By shading the faces and visible body parts of his figures with oil colours and clothing them in richly patterned Ankara fabrics, he brings together the tactile, historical, and emotional aspects of African life, specifically Oyo town in Nigeria.
Ademola Ajayi’s practice reflects a deep engagement with Yoruba traditions, memory, and
cultural heritage. Growing up in Oyo, he draws inspiration from the age-long practice of scarification, known as Ìlà Ìkùn, which serves as a marker of identity, lineage, and belonging within his community. For him, scarification is not only a cultural practice but also a visual archive that embodies resilience, solidarity, and continuity.
Working primarily in mixed media, Ajayi combines pencil drawings with oil colours, pencil, and vibrant Ankara fabrics. His technique involves drawing scarifications on the body of his subjects while clothing them in richly patterned fabrics, a method that merges human intimacy with the vibrancy of African textiles to clothe his subjects.. This approach allows him to explore how cultural symbols can be translated into contemporary art forms.
At the core of his practice, Ajayi uses art as a means of storytelling and communication—expressing his thoughts on social issues, translating personal experiences, and sharing positive energy. His work stands as both a documentation of heritage and a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Ademola has exhibited in several group shows, including Fix It at the Life in My City Art Festival (2023), We Are Who We Say We Are, One Art Gallery, Ibadan. His art is a means of storytelling, healing, and sharing positive energy, while also addressing social issues and cultural continuity.
