Born in 1873 in Sathonay-Village in the Rhône region, Adrien Godien trained as an artist at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he was a pupil of Tony Tollet, among others. He exhibited for the first time at the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts in 1896, then in Paris from 1899 onwards.
Portraits, and more particularly self-portraits, were among his favorite subjects. He also distinguished himself in painting theater scenes and landscapes along the banks of the Rhône, rendered in a rich palette. His broad, fluttering brushstrokes, inherited from Impressionism, allowed him to capture the shimmering costumes in motion.
