About the Item

19th century French School oil on canvas. Four portraits and self-portraits after Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn on a rectangular gilded stuccoed wood compartment frame decorated with canals and palmettes. Dimensions with frame: Height 57.5 cm x width 64 x depth 9,5 cm Dimensions without frame: Height 36 cm x width 43 x depth 3 cm Copying - a technical exercise - is one of the most popular techniques in classical art training and while not bearing any signature this 19th century study after Rembrandt was made by a skilled artist who captured four instants of the master's creations assembled on a single canvas each laying in their own window on a four compartments frame. The four portraits are on the same canvas. Original works Top left - Self Portrait (1633) Top right - Rembrandt Portrait of Titus van Rijn (1662) Bottom left - Self Portrait with an Architectural Background (1639) Bottom right - Bearded Man in a Fur Hat (1640) "Rembrandt portraits and self portraits are among his greatest works and they constitute an intimate autobiography. Few artists have produced so many representations of themselves than Rembrandt. His students frequently copied these self-portraits painted in the studio, trained in their model and themselves painted in the style of Rembrandt. Later in his life Rembrandt represented himself as an established personality, with collarette and coat, and even with a hat. He is clearly inspired in some portraits of the style that was practiced in Amsterdam where, at all times, oval portraits were fashionable."
