About the Item

Where to begin? First, how many couples find stratospheric success sharing both careers and marriage? As comedians? For decades? Perhaps the closest today might be Steve and Nancy Carell, married since 1995, or Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy. But the pairing of George Burns and Gracie Allen turned into an iconic and beloved American comedy duo, who were married and whose careers spanned more than 40 years in vaudeville, film, radio, and television. Their personal and professional partnership was one of the most enduring in entertainment history. Second, how many original color paintings like this one were done by Al Hirschfeld (1903–2003) and even exist today? This is one of his inimitable caricatures to be sure. But done with so much warmth and affection, it goes beyond his distinctive black and white line drawings of celebrities and Broadway stars. Hirschfeld described himself as a "characterist" rather than a caricaturist because his drawings, like this painting, were affectionate. He aimed to distill the subject's personality rather than ridicule them through exaggerated features. Throughout his decades-long career, Hirschfeld documented a vast range of popular culture, including theater, film, music, and television. His work captured the Golden Age of Hollywood’s stars like Katharine Hepburn and the Marx Brothers, as well as musicians like The Beatles and Duke Ellington. He illustrated numerous books, album covers (including the Aerosmith album Draw the Line), and even U.S. postage stamps. He received multiple honors, including a National Medal of the Arts in 2002, and the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway was renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in his honor after his death in 2003. Signature: lower right. Gallery label verso refers to the gallery which represented the artist for more than 50 years.
