About the Item
Alfred Jensen
Untitled two sided painting, 1947
2-sided gouache painting on board (one portrait is vertical; the other horizontal)
29 × 23 7/20 inches
Signed and dated in paint on the front of the horizontal image
Unique
Unframed
Rare early work by Alfred Jensen from the late 1940s. Two sided painting with a different portrait on each side. Acquired from the estate of Jerome Goodman, collector and personal friend of the artist who acquired this directly from Jensen
This very early painting - from 1947 - is fascinating because even though Jensen would later become known for his geometric abstractions, one can already see here the Cubist influence in his early figurative work.
ALFRED JENSEN BIOGRAPHY
Alfred Jensen studied painting at the San Diego Fine Arts School and in Munich under Hans Hofmann.
After moving to the United States in 1934, his patron Saidie Alder May encouraged him to pursue his interest in color theory and pattern. Jensen's intricately organized diagrams reflect his distinctive conceptual approach, begun in the late 1950s when he started to refine his wide-ranging studies of systems and philosophies—from theories of color and light, mathematics, and the Mayan calendar, to scientific formulations—into multicolored checkerboards. He used mathematical systems to construct two-dimensional grid paintings and demonstrate color theories, but the work itself is metaphorical, referencing pre-Colombian and Asian cultures, textiles, and divination.

Alfred Jensen
Born in Guatemala, Alfred Julio Jensen was an abstract painter. His paintings are often characterized by grids of brightly colored triangles, circles or squares, painted in thick impasto. Conveying a complex web of ideas, often incorporating calligraphy or numerical systems, they are frequently referred to as "concrete" abstract art.[2] After his death in 1981, the Guggenheim organized a major retrospective of his work, having held his solo exhibition there in 1961.

Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother (The Fifth Commandment), 1987
6 Color Lithograph on Dieu Donne handmade paper
24 × 18 inches
Pencil signed and numbered 6/84 in graphite on the front
Unframed with deckled edges
This five color lithograph on Dieu Donne hand made paper with deckled edges is pencil signed, dated and numbered from the limited edition of 84. This 1980s Robert Kushner print was created as part of the 1987 portfolio "The Ten Commandments", in which ten top Jewish American artists were each invited to choose an Old Testament commandment to interpret in contemporary lithographic form. The "Chosen" artists were, in order of Commandment: Kenny Scharf, Joseph Nechvatal, Gretchen Bender, April Gornik, Robert Kushner, Nancy Spero, Vito Acconci, Jane Dickson, Judy Rifka and Richard Bosman. This is the first time the print will have been removed from the original portfolio case. (shown). Lisa Liebmann, who wrote the introduction to the collection, observed: "...The image has, for most of us, replaced the word..." With respect to the present work, she writes, "There is a sweet smell of nostalgia to Robert Kushner's view of the FIFTH COMMANDMENT, to honor one's parents. Kushner's subtly ornate use of colors suffuses his subject with a filagreed texture of warmth. In this gentle icon, the traditional duo - all those Ozzies and Harriets in our hearts and on the airwaves -are frames as if by a bubble bath of affection."
ROBERT KUSHNER BIOGRAPHY
