Alfred PLAUZEAU Avanton-Paché (Vienna), 1875 - Hendaye, 1918 Oil on oil 61 x 38 cm (75.5 x 52.5 cm with frame) Signed lower right "A. Plauzeau" Good condition (sevreal restoration, well restored, tears and a few repaints)
Alfred Plauzeau is an artist born in the Poitou region in France. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts with Jean-Léon Gérôme from 1897 and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris from 1900. He was first an academic artist close to his master Gerome and painted historical and allegorical subjects, and portraits, and then he used a different and impressionist style to represent local subjects about the life of the people in Poitou. He had success in both genres, won prizes and medals but his career will be short because he died in 1917 during the First World War. Our painting is a very beautiful portrait in a style still very close to his master Gérôme with a great precision of the drawing, a remarquable rendering of his subjects and bright and vivid colors. In 1985, the Sainte-Croix de Poitiers museum organized an important retrospective to rediscover this painter.
