Beautiful 19th-century giltwood frame
André Collin was a Belgian academic painter who studied with Jean-François Portaels at the Brussels Academy, He then went to Paris where he studied with Jules Lefebvre and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. He received an honorable mention there in 1890.
Our painting is a portrait of a model, “Regina,” a young Italian woman wearing beautiful jewelry. Perhaps a study for a character for a larger composition. The young woman is beautifully modeled, enhanced by the contrast between the magnificent golden yellow of the background and the light color of her skin. A very luminous painting with beautiful flat areas of white for the costume and very beautiful colors, especially the blue of the dress and the golden yellow of the jewelry and of the background.
