Andrea Vaccaro (1604-1670) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was one of the most successful painters in Naples at his time. He and his workshops produced many religious works. He was initially influenced by Caravaggio, but after 1630 he came into contact with works by Guido Reni (1575-1642), Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), and Pietro Novelli (1603-1647). He even produced copies of works of those artists for Neapolitan collectors and Flemish art dealers in Naples. The painting shows stylistic features typical of 17th century Neapolitan painting. The painting portrays a penitent Magdalene who is depicted frontally with her hands clasped on her breasts and her face turned up to the left. Other versions of this composition exist, but all are based on the same preparatory cartoon, even though all of inferior quality or with conspicuous workshop contributions.
