Signed lower right, 'H. Lauer' for Hans Lauer, (Argentine-German, 1902-1989) and dated 1965. Hans Lauer emerges as a sympathetic chronicler of Patagonian light, a German-born landscapist who made Argentina his country and Bariloche his enduring motif. Born in Nuremberg in 1902, he emigrated to Argentina in 1920 and fixed his practice in the Nahuel Huapi region, painting the blue-white atmospheres of the lake basin and the sheltering stands of native forest with a direct, self-taught hand; he remained rooted there until his death in Bariloche in 1989. Contemporary reports place him working across northern Patagonia—San Martín de los Andes among his circuits—where he translated the temperate Andean palette into sober oils and watercolors keyed to weather and season rather than to metropolitan fashions. Autodidact by formation, he belongs to that émigré cohort who stitched European discipline to local terrain, and by the 1950s–60s his production reflects an assured, observational plein-air habit that privileges structure over effect. While Bariloche provided the studio and the subject, his name also circulates in Buenos Aires contexts through collectors and dealers who sought Patagonian views during the mid-century tourism boom, an afterlife that helped keep his vistas in the market even as he remained geographically anchored to the south. Nadezda's beautiful new oil on panel painting "Ingredients" (2024) is a surrealist portrait of a young woman, dressed in Russian-inspired clothing and resting curiously during the night beside a plume of mushrooms, among a surreal field of spirits. Behind her, flying away is the spirit of a woman and a cat, and in front float two clay faces among the peonies. Nadezda is a painter, sculptor, photographer, and concept artist. Her artwork is focused on narratives carefully gathered from the hidden chambers of her imagination as well as live theater-inspired work with actors, dancers, and models. Like a quilt stitched of poetic realities, Nadezda’s mysterious world defies the mundane. With a non-linear creative process flowing between different media, the artist explores various vantage points in her creations. This dynamic approach inspires her mind’s eye to focus on the worlds within and evoke an uninterrupted, creative transmission which is then channeled through her paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, writing and film. Personal life Ida Waugh was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 24, 1846, the daughter of painter Samuel B. Waugh and his first wife, Sarah Mendenhall, therefore she was half-sister of painter Frederick Judd Waugh. Her step-mother was Mary Eliza Young Waugh, a miniaturist. She attended Académie Julian and Académie Delécluse in Paris, studying with Georges Callot, Paul-Louis Delance, and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant.In 1868 she attended the first "Ladies Life Class" at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; in the same class there were Emily Sartain and Catherine Ann Drinker. Career Ida Waugh collaborated with her partner Amy Ella Blanchard in publishing children's books, Waugh as illustrator and Blanchard as writer.
