This is a portrait of a seated woman in a black bonnet. Gestural swathes of paint govern the subject of this portrait. Here, the eyes are the focal point of the work, with the facial features highlighted with delicate attention to detail. Although the sitter is unknown, the artist explores her character through attentive handling and renders her facial expression with curiosity and kindness.
The application of paint in the lower half of the work is increasingly abstract, the loose brushstrokes injecting an energy into the work and exemplifying the artist's loose, non-finito attitude towards portraiture. The background is created with multiple layers of colour applied rapidly over one another, the portrait being built up in multiple layers of intersecting brushstrokes of varying length, thickness and colour.

Arthur Hacker RA (25 September 1858 - 12 November 1919) was an English classicist painter born in London. Hacker was the son of Edward Hacker (1813–1905), a line engraver specialising in animal and sporting prints (who was also for many years the official Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths for Kentish Town in the St Pancras registration district, north London). In his art he was most known for painting religious scenes and portraits, and his art was also influenced by his extensive travels in Spain and North Africa. He studied at the Royal Academy between 1867 and 1880, and at the Atelier Bonnat in Paris. He was twice exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1878 and 1910, and was elected an Academician in 1910.
