About the Item

This lovely British Impressionist portrait oil painting is by noted Nottinghamshire artist Arthur Spooner. Painted circa 1930 it is a charming head and shoulders portrait of a young lady in a white hat and summer dress. Her head is turned to her left so she is demurely gazing away from the artist/viewer as if lost in her own thoughts. The sitter is believed to be a waitress from a Nottingham coffee house. The painting was offered to the vendor's grandfather, who also attended Nottingham School of Art, for "the price of a three-piece suit" which Spooner required to go to the Royal Academy. There is lovely detail and brushwork in her facial features and cupid's bow red lips and the whole presentation is quite romantic. This is an excellent example of Spooner's work with interesting provenance. Signed lower right see photo. Provenance. The Vendor`s Grandfather attended Nottingham School of Art and met Spooner there. By family tradition this portrait is believed to be a waitress from a Nottingham coffee house and was offered for "the price of a three-piece suit" which Spooner required to go to the Royal Academy. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a silvered Art Deco Bourlet frame, 31 inches by 27 inches, in good condition. Arthur Spooner (1873–1962) was a British Impressionist painter from Nottingham, England. Spooner was born in Nottingham and trained at the Nottingham School of Art (now part of Nottingham Trent University) in the late 19th century. He later taught landscape and figurative painting there in the early 20th century. He painted The Goose Fair, Nottingham in 1926. The painting was sold at Christie's in 2004 and is displayed in Nottingham Castle. Nottingham Society of Artists 1908, Vice President Nottingham Society of Artists 1924 and 1938, ARBA 1919, Royal Society of British Artists 1920.
