About the Item

This is a well done self portrait of the listed American artist Bernard Stafford Good. Painted in 1937, it is a fine example of American illustration art produced by the Brandywine School of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware of the period. It also relates to Norman Rockwell and his illustrative style of the early twentieth century. The portrait is oil on canvas and inscribed “self p. Sketch S.G. 1937” lower right. Good used confident brush strokes and a warm palette to project his seemingly warm and cheerful disposition. It’s quite the opposite of what most artists portray themselves as being - stern, stiff or aloof. His countenance is firm, yet pleasant and the inclusion of his glasses and likely signature pipe is an added period touch. Bernard S. Good was born in England in 1893. He came to Canada in 1910, moving west to Manitoba to work on the railroad. By. 1914 he had located to Chicago, where he enrolled at the Art Institute. Returning to Canada to serve during the period of World War I, he returned to the US after the war to resume his studies at the Institute. Upon graduation in 1920, he moved to New York, where he enrolled at the Art Students League. Focusing as an illustrator, Good met artists connected with the Pyle School in Wilmington, Delaware. His true break came when he was introduced to N C Wyeth. Wyeth convinced young Good to join him in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. There, he created illustrations for many prominent magazines of the day. Around 1934 Good moved to Wilmington and began teaching at the Wilmington Academy of Art, now the Delaware Art Museum. He remained there until making a final move to New Hampshire around the beginning of World War II. There, he was very involved with the Laconia Arts Group and helped to create the New Hampshire Art Association. Bernard Good passed away in 1969. The oil on canvas measures 16” x 20” and is in good, bright condition. As previously mentioned, it is inscribed lower right. On the reverse stretchers are estate stamp markings, a number sticker that likely indicates the portrait was included in a museum or gallery exhibition at some time in the past and some pencil writing on the center of the top stretcher. The portrait is housed in a somewhat later wood frame from the 1950’s or 60’s that compliments it quite well. It, too, is in good condition with no issues to report. Overall framed measurements are 21 x 26” approximately. This truly American period portrait is ready to hang on the wall and enjoy.
