About the Item
Beautiful and timeless portrait .It represents a half-length male portrait, with the sitter seated in a chair, slightly in profile. He is a young man, belonging to a prominent political family from Palencia, Díez-Quijada. He appears elegantly dressed, wearing the period's attire: a black jacket over a white shirt and a black bow tie. His facial expression is serene, slightly rigid, but with an exquisite level of detail in his facial features. The attention to detail in his hands is also striking. This work is of extraordinary quality. The wide red curtain in the background creates space and gives the work depth. It features a simple gilt frame from the period, with flaws befitting its age.
The 19th century has sometimes been called "The Century of the Portrait." From its very beginning, portraiture was associated with figures endowed with economic, social, or political power that they wished to display and perpetuate. However, it enjoyed its golden age during the 19th century, especially during the last third, as it became a coveted form of distinction among those who could afford it. It extended to all types of techniques: painting, sculpture, medals, miniatures, watercolors, drawings, etchings, lithography, photography… Furthermore, the influence of photography and the approach of the arts to realism led to the depiction of effigies with an ever-increasing naturalism.
Brief biography of Blas González García-Valladolid (1839 – 1919)
Blas González García-Valladolid Moral was born in Valladolid. His passion for painting was born in his childhood, as he was the son of the local painter and academic Pedro González Moral, from whom he learned the trade along with his brother Isidro. His brother was Casimiro González García-Valladolid, a famous historian from Valladolid, whose works are essential for the study of its history and art. He received his training in painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of the Immaculate Conception in Valladolid with Agapito López San Román and José Martí y Monsó.
He cultivated other arts besides painting, such as sculpture and engraving, and even restoration and decoration. He became the most sought-after portraitist in Valladolid. He painted portraits of monarchs, such as Isabel II and Alfonso XIII; archbishops; official institutions; and the Valladolid bourgeoisie in general, with particular emphasis on the portraits of the presidents of the RABAPC (National Association of Religious Orders). All of them have a somewhat conventional character, a meticulous technique, and precise intonation, all based on photographs.
Although portraiture was his most developed genre, he also produced historicist, costumbrist, and religious paintings. A professor and member of the RABAPC, his extensive work can be found in many local institutions and religious establishments in the city: the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, the Archbishop's Palace, the Cathedral, and many of the cloisters of the female religious orders in Valladolid.
