About Artist
Bola Obatuyi (b. 1992, Ibadan, Nigeria) is a mixed-media artist whose practice blends fabric, acrylics, cardboard, and found materials into intricate compositions that celebrate femininity, body positivity, and sisterhood. Through a labor-intensive process of cutting, sewing, pinning, and layering, she transforms everyday fabrics and waste objects into visually striking works that interrogate beauty, identity, and representation.
Drawing inspiration from traditional African weaving patterns, textiles, and attire, Obatuyi fuses optical illusions, pixelated glitches, and acid drips into her surfaces—creating a contemporary visual language rooted in cultural memory. Her works often expand beyond the canvas, incorporating wall drawings and mixed media interventions that invite viewers to reconsider societal perceptions of Black women.
At the heart of her practice is a commitment to reframing narratives of underrepresentation. Obatuyi’s figures embody strength, charm, and vulnerability, serving as visual affirmations of the depth and beauty of feminine identity. She combines visual and written storytelling to challenge stereotypes, foregrounding the resilience and complexity of women’s experiences.
Her artistic influences include Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Andy Warhol, Oluwole Omofemi, and Marcellina Akpojotor, whose approaches to pattern, narrative, and pop culture inform her exploration of materiality and identity.
