About the Item
On offer is a captivating portrait of a young girl in profile identified as a "Dutch Girl" not only by the title but also its "old master” style reminiscent of older Dutch painting traditions. This work in oil on canvas was created in 1924 by the Danish artist Carl Conrad Stilling (1874-1938). The sitter’s braided blonde hair emerges from under her brown hat and is tied together with a striking, bright red ribbon, providing a focal point of color against the darker background and muted green, fur-cuffed coat.
Born in Copenhagen in 1874, Stilling traveled extensively throughout Europe, visiting Holland, Paris, Italy, and other regions, which influenced his artistic development. He exhibited widely. Known for his Impressionistic style, particularly in his landscape paintings, this portrait demonstrates the artist’s skill in capturing “Old Master” atmospheric light and detail in figure painting as well. He passed away in Rungsted, Denmark, in 1938.
