About the Item
19th Century Cesare Ciani Credited Italian Macchiaiolo Painting
A beautiful, intense painting attributed to the great Macchiaioli painter Cesare Ciani.
It depicts with rare realism a peasant woman immersed in deep thought, perhaps romantic in a bucolic setting of rare depth.
The intense colour palette, the decisive brushstrokes, the subject and the period all point to a coherent attribution to the great Florentine artist.
Available a pair
Cesare Ciani (Florence, 28 February 1854 – Florence, 13 February 1925) was an Italian painter.
After completing his studies at the Technical Institute and serving in the military until 1878, he enrolled at the Academy of Florence and attended courses taught by Giuseppe Ciaranfi and Giovanni Fattori, whose underlying philosophy he assimilated, which was expressed in his lively attention to themes concerning the landscape and the figures that revolve around it.
In 1888, he presented La Vedova (The Widow) at the Circolo degli Artisti, for which he received an honorable mention at the International Exhibition in Paris the following year.
He exhibited regularly at the Promotrici and then at Italian art exhibitions.
At the turn of the century, his painting was intensely vitalistic, as demonstrated by works such as Interno di Officina (Workshop Interior) dated 1898, which echoes contemporary works by Lovis Corinth in its interest in workers and machines, or Villa Bianca all'Isola d'Elba (White Villa on the Island of Elba), which belonged to Mario Galli and whose title alone expresses his passionate attention to Mediterranean light (reproduced in Pelagatti-Tassi 1962 and Cesare Ciani 1978).
In 1922, presented by Mario Tinti, he participated in the Primaverile Fiorentina with a large number of works, including: Bambino malato (Sick Child), Donne del popolo (Women of the People), Mercato (Market); examples of the artist's poetics, which since the early 20th century had focused on rural and popular subjects.
These themes were also in keeping with the painting style of the so-called post-Macchiaioli, a group to which Ciani was also customarily assigned by critics.
