Antique carved and gilded frame
This intimate work is signed by Charles Hermans, a major 19th-century Belgian painter trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. A pupil of Jean-François Portaels, Hermans belongs to the tradition of poetic realism, influenced by the Flemish masters and the great European portraitists. He is especially renowned for the softness of his female portraits, always imbued with sensitivity, restraint, and elegance.
The painting presented here depicts a young girl with loose hair, dressed in a simple white gown and wearing a cross pendant. The calm, almost meditative expression of the sitter, along with the delicate treatment of her complexion and hair, perfectly illustrate Hermans’s art of subtle suggestion.

After a trip to Italy in 1870, he came back to Brussels for creating a private Art Academy providing a very liberal teaching.
His portraits are made with a lot of freedom and gracefulness.
