18th century English portrait of a young girl as a shepherdess, c. 1720-1730 This elegant and graceful portrait depicts a young lady as a shepherdess. She is captured in a in a peaceful country landscape with lush green trees, in the distance we can see a sunset colouring the sky in a warm pink hue. Her delicate and flowing gown is made of a sumptuous shimmering green silk and carefully arranged flowers adorn her dark brown locks, further emphasising the romantical and ethereal charm of the sitter in this idillic portrait. Charles Jervas (c. 1675-1739) was a notable English portrait painter and art collector who lived and worked during a period of artistic and cultural transformation in England. Born around 1675, Jervas entered the art scene during the Late Stuart period, a time marked by significant historical changes. This era included the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which led to the establishment of constitutional monarchy under William III and Mary II. England was undergoing shifts in politics and society, which would influence the art world. Jervas gained recognition as a portrait artist and became one of the leading portrait painters of his time. His works were characterized by a refined and elegant style, capturing the likenesses of prominent figures, including members of the aristocracy and literary figures. His career coincided with a growing demand for portraiture as the English middle class expanded and social mobility increased. Apart from his artistic pursuits, Jervas played a role in connecting the English art scene with continental Europe. He spent time in Italy, where he studied and collected art, absorbing the influence of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque styles. This exposure to European art contributed to his refined technique and understanding of classical aesthetics. Jervas' legacy extended beyond his paintings. He was known for his friendship and correspondence with notable figures like Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift, both influential writers of the era. His association with literary circles and intellectuals added depth to his artistic endeavors.
