CONDITION: very good (original frame with cracks and damage)
DETAIL: A superb 18th Century oval portrait of the highest quality. The sitter is written lower right of the canvas 'Mrs Wyndham" - my limited research suggests Dahl painted portraits of several women from the Wyndham family most notably Jane Wyndham of Dunraven held in the collection of the National Museum of Wales.
Dahl was a Swedish portrait painter, active mainly in England. He settled permanently in London in 1689 (following an earlier stay in 1682–5) and became Godfrey Kneller's principal rival. His work is less dashing and fluent than Kneller's, but at his best he surpasses him in sincerity and humanity. There are several paintings by him or from his busy studio in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
The painting has been removed from a stretcher many many years ago and laid to board. We havent removed it but haev added a couple of images of what we can see. The original frame remains in situ albeit there are a number of cracks to the frame but it is still solid and perfectly useable.. The remains of the label with indistinct faded writing that reads "Wyndham" is adhered to the bottom of the frame.
