About the Item

A finely executed portrait miniature in oil on copper depicting a gentleman dressed in a black gown and white lawn collar. The piece is dated verso 1660 and the sitter was likely associated with the Stuart court in exile. Following defeat in battle or in fear of persecution, many Royalists fled to continental Europe—most notably France, the Netherlands, and the Spanish Netherlands (modern Belgium). Stylistically, the miniature aligns with the work of the Anglo-French painter David des Granges, though most oil miniatures on copper of this type remain anonymous. At the outbreak of the English Civil War, the demand for Royalist portrait tokens was high, and des Granges supported himself by painting likenesses of loyalist supporters. David des Granges, the son of Samson de Granges and Marie Bouvier, was baptised twice on 24 March 1611—first at the French church on Threadneedle Street, and again at St Ann Blackfriars. He married in 1636 and moved from the parish of St Ann Blackfriars to Long Acre, where he was living again near the end of his life around 1672. After the Restoration in 1660, des Granges’ work shows the influence of court painter Jacob Huysmans, and possibly Samuel Cooper. Though considered a leading artist of his time, his securely attributed works are now difficult to identify. Provenance: Purchased at auction in Belgium as a 17th-century miniature. *Stand not included. Condition: There is some retouching above the sitter’s head. As with most miniatures of this type, the varnish has discoloured over time, causing a slight darkening of the surface. Otherwise, the work remains in good condition. The wooden oval is cracked in two places. Size 10cm x 8cm Oval 22cm 20cm Framed ________________________________________

Circle of Fred MORGAN (1847-1927) c1890
Located in Holywell, GB
Circle of Fred MORGAN (1847-1927) c1890 A sensitively painted portrait, possibly a study for a larger work, of a young country girl. Indistinctly signed ** Morgan, possibly Fred. Unfortunately Fred signed in a number of different ways depending on the grandeur of his work. However, a consistent element was the colour, a reddish brown similar to the colour of the signature on this painting. I can offer no provenance with this painting, so I am selling at as circle of Morgan rather than actually by him. “Frederick Morgan ROI was an English painter of portraits, animals, domestic and country scenes. He became known for his idyllic genre scenes of childhood. Morgan was born in London to John Morgan and his wife, Henrietta Hester Clare. His father was a successful genre artist sometimes known as 'Jury Morgan' (after one of his paintings The Gentlemen of the Jury). At the age of 14, he was taken out of school by his father who then tutored him in art. At the age of 16, while still studying with his father, his first picture, The Rehearsal, was exhibited at the Royal Academy, and, after a hiatus of several years, his paintings were shown there regularly. For a while he worked as a portrait artist for an Aylesbury photographer; this training proved to be crucial as it "taught him how to observe closely and to give the greatest attention to detail." Eventually he turned to other subjects for his art, in particular idyllic genre scenes of country life and childhood. For many years, starting in 1874, Thomas Agnew & Sons' purchased all the work he produced. Although an excellent portrait artist, Morgan had problems in depicting pets and barnyard animals - he enlisted the aid of either Arthur John Elsley...

There is a wealth of history about the sitter online , below is a brief resume John Pettus Sir John Pettus (1613–1690) was an English royalist, politician and natural philosopher. Pettus was an expert on metallurgy and became a deputy governor of the royal mines in England and Wales under Charles I and II. He is known for the first English translation of the work of the German metallurgist Lazarus Ercker. Pettus’s grandfather was a wealthy Norwich merchant ,he purchased the manor of Rackheath in 1590 and represented the city in 1601 and 1604-10. Although a younger son, Pettus inherited the manors of Chediston and Wenhaston, He married well; but even before the Civil War most of his estate was mortgaged, and his wife’s expectations were never realized, owing to her father’s misfortunes as leader of the City Royalists. Pettus became a servant to Charles I, and took part in the farcical royalist attempt on Lowestoft in March 1643, but was exchanged after nearly a year in prison. It is unlikely that he resumed command of his regiment, such as it was, since he ‘continued inoffensive till the taking of Bristol’ by the New Model Army...
