About the Item
David Leviathan (Israeli, born 1964)
"Old Man" 2006
Oil paint on canvas, stretcher bars
The artist signed the bottom right corner of the painting.
“Old Man” is a powerful figurative painting by Israeli artist David Leviathan, rendered with thick, expressive layers of oil paint that construct the face through movement rather than line. The portrait emerges slowly from the surface, built through dense impasto, scraped passages, and interwoven strokes that give the image both physical weight and emotional gravity.
Leviathan does not seek likeness in a conventional sense. Instead, he captures presence. The figure’s features appear worn and weathered, shaped by time, memory, and experience. Muted earth tones, soft ochres, pale yellows, and bruised pinks are layered and reworked, allowing traces of earlier decisions to remain visible. The paint itself becomes a record of lived history, echoing the subject’s age and introspection.
Known for his psychologically charged portraits, Leviathan often explores themes of identity, vulnerability, and endurance. In “Old Man,” the face feels suspended between emergence and dissolution, as if hovering at the threshold between inner life and outward form. The background dissolves into atmosphere, pushing the viewer’s focus toward the expressive density of the face and the tactile surface of the paint.
About the Artist:
Born in Israel, Leviathan developed his visual language through sustained engagement with painting as a physical and intuitive process, favoring layered compositions and textured surfaces that reveal evidence of time, revision, and touch. His work often balances structure and spontaneity, allowing color, gesture, and density to build meaning rather than relying on overt representation.
Leviathan’s paintings are characterized by complex stratifications of paint, scraped and reworked areas, and a nuanced palette that moves between earthy tones and heightened chromatic moments. This process-driven approach gives his work a sense of depth and quiet intensity, inviting prolonged viewing and close inspection. While abstract in form, his compositions often suggest spatial relationships, emotional states, or internal landscapes without becoming literal.
Throughout his career, David Leviathan has remained committed to painting as a contemplative and evolving practice. His work reflects a sensitivity to material, balance, and restraint, positioning him within a lineage of contemporary abstraction that values process, surface, and atmosphere. His paintings are held in private collections and are appreciated for their timeless quality and thoughtful construction.

David Leviathan
David Leviathan, born on 6 August 1950, is a multi-talented Israeli artist, renowned for his contributions to painting, sculpting, and poetry. Growing up in the nurturing environment of Kibbutz Givat Brenner in Israel, Leviathan's artistic journey began to unfold right after completing his military service in 1972. He honed his skills at the Avni Institute of Fine Arts, where he not only studied under the guidance of the esteemed artist Yehezkel Streichman but also later assumed the role of a teacher himself. After a period of exploration in the late 1970s, where he delved into the intertwining cycles of nature and the female monthly cycle through three-dimensional objects, Leviathan shifted his focus to Amsterdam in 1979. Influenced by Albert Camus' thought-provoking book, "The Fall," he channeled his artistic expression into composing oil paintings that grappled with Camus' ideas. This marked the inception of his first solo exhibition in Amsterdam, aptly titled "The Fall." In the subsequent years, Leviathan's art embraced the Four Elements (Air, Water, Fire,
Earth) as a central theme for his abstracts, complemented by captivating Human Heads, some of which adorned enormous canvases. Seeking inspiration and a broader perspective, he spent two weeks annually from 1981 to 1989 on various Greek islands, where he relied on a donkey to carry his equipment. This immersive experience allowed him to further explore the vibrancy of the elements and the depths of the human form. Having obtained Dutch citizenship in 1992, Leviathan spent the following years traversing between Amsterdam and Paris, immersing himself in the creative energy of both cities. A temporary return to Israel saw the white color taking on a significant role in his work, contributing to the unique ambiance he sought to create. Throughout his artistic endeavors, a recurring motif in Leviathan's work is the contemplation of life and death within the cyclicality of existence. He often portrays old women in his art, focusing intently on their facial expressions and using techniques to blur and obscure the images. This approach aims to capture profound spiritual emotions and establish a certain atmospheric essence, evoking a delicate balance between growth and decline. David Leviathan's remarkable artistic exploration continues to captivate audiences, as he continuously pushes the boundaries of creativity and introspection. His works invite viewers to contemplate the mysteries of life, death, and the essence of the human experience. 1

French 1961 "Clown a la Colerette" Figurative Expressionist Oil Painting
By Claude Weisbuch
Located in Surfside, FL
WEISBUCH, Claude. Oil on Canvas "Clown a la Colerette" 1961. Signed lower right, further signed, titled and dated verso. Dimensions: 18.25" high x 24" wide.
Claude Weisbuch, 1927-2014 French painter, draftsman and engraver. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Nancy and upon graduation became a professor of engraving at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de of St. Etienne. His first solo exhibition was in 1957.
In 1968 , he became a full member of the Society of French Painters-Engravers .
In 1997 he was awarded the Legion of Honor
His work is essentially devoted to engraving, by which he likes to translate, thanks to the line, the life, movement and character of his characters: Punchinels, harlequins, musicians or equestrian scenes. He practices various techniques ( lithography, drypoint etching etc.) that he puts to use in the illustration of bibliophile books.
Claude Weisbuch is also a painter and draftsman. His favorite colors are ochres, browns and whites, with which he seeks to introduce the effects of light by compositions where the line and finesse of the drawing preserve the life found in his engravings.
His precise and dynamic line delivers a moving and swirling work on themes he loves: theater, opera, equestrian, musicians, card players, Kabuki dancers and many portraits.
His works have the appearance of unfinished sketches mixing few colors but a great vivacity of the line. He illustrated many limited edition signed fine art books. Alon with Christo, Arman and Cesar he is considered among the great post war French artists of the last generation.
