About the Item
F. Carbonara was an Italian miniature portrait artist active in the early 19th century. There is an example by him at the metropolitan museum.
• Extremely fine brushwork in the face and hair
• A carefully modelled interior with classical drapery and architectural columns
• The sitter placed in a literate or professional setting (books, papers, table)
• Use of strong, saturated colours in fabrics and upholstery
• An oval composition often set into a rich gilt mount
Signed "Carbonara 1808", the sitter appears to be a gentleman of professional or scholarly standing. Accompanying family information suggests a possible connection to Gabriel Verplanck Ludlow (1768–1825), a distinguished New York lawyer and Master of the Court of Chancery.
Gabriel Verplanck Ludlow (1768–1825) was a prominent American lawyer and Master of the Court of Chancery for New York. He was a member of the influential Ludlow family of New York, a wealthy Loyalist family during the American Revolution.
