Frans van der Mijn (1719 – 1783) was a Dutch painter who specialised in portrait painting. He was the son of Herman van der Mijn, an 18th-century painter from the Dutch Republic, and was born when his father moved to Düsseldorf, Germany. He worked in Amsterdam from 1742 until 1748 and worked in The Hague before returning to England where he worked on portraits and sent a painting in to the London Society of Artists each year during 1761–1772. The subject of this painting is a gentlewoman who wears various pearl-adorned jewellery, including a necklace, hair clips, a pair of earrings, and strands of pearls that adorn her gown. In addition to pearl clips, we can also see a floral decoration in her hair. The young noblewoman wears a dark evening gown adorned with lace and pearls, over which she has a purple stole.

This superb large three quarter length British Old Master portrait in a landscape oil painting is attributed to circle of John Vanderbank the Younger. Painted circa 1738 the sitter is Mrs James Hoste of South Wootton and Sandringham, nee Hammond. She was the daughter of Anthony Hamond and Susan Walpole, daughter of Robert Walpole, and was sister to Robert, 1st Earl of Oxford. She married Major James Hoste of Sandringham, Norfolk, and they had two daughters. The sheen of her blue satin dress against her gold cloak is stunning. A really lovely 18th century portrait with excellent provenance.
Inscribed with sitter details lower left.
