About the Item

17th-century German portrait of the wine merchant Caspar Roemerskirchen at the age of 26 in 1628, Franz Kessler (attr.) This highly decorative portrait depicts the 26-year-old Caspar Roemerskirchen, wearing an intricate jacket made of a luxurious black fabric, stiffened and shaped to perfectly fit his silhouette. It is adorned with an opulent collar, which at the time was a true status symbol, worn to emphasise the refined class and social status of the sitter. In his hands he holds a pair of soft, high-quality leather gloves. The vivid green drapery and tablecloth add further vivacity to the portrait. His ice-blue eyes appear to shimmer with a life-like quality. After extensive archival research, we were able to discover that our sitter was a wine merchant; what joyous stories he must have had to tell! Franz Kessler (ca. 1580–1650) was a German painter active primarily in Cologne and Westphalia. Known for his portraits as well as for his work as an engraver and inventor, Kessler’s artistic output reflects the refined realism and careful attention to detail characteristic of early 17th-century German painting. His portraits often present their sitters with a heightened sense of presence, capturing both social stature and psychological nuance. Kessler’s works offer glimpses into the cultural and civic environments of his region, serving as both artistic achievements and valuable historical records. His ability to imbue his sitters with dignity and immediacy ensures that his paintings transcend mere likeness, standing instead as enduring testaments to the era’s aesthetic and humanistic concerns. His works are represented in notable collections. Dimensions: The board measures approx. 97 × 75 cm; with frame approx. 115 × 93 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Germany.
