About the Item
The painting titled Portrait of a Boy in Profile, attributed to Friedrich Wasmann (1805–1886), exemplifies the refined portraiture characteristic of the Biedermeier period. Executed in oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, the artwork captures the delicate features and contemplative demeanor of a young boy, rendered with subtle coloration and attention to detail. The composition's simplicity and intimate scale reflect the era's emphasis on personal and domestic subjects. Inscribed on the frame is Friedrich Wasmann. Not signed.
Friedrich Wasmann was a German painter renowned for his portraits and religious works. Born in Hamburg, he began his artistic training under Christoffer Suhr and furthered his studies at the academies in Dresden and Munich. His time in Rome from 1832 to 1835 was pivotal; there, he engaged with artists like Friedrich Overbeck and Joseph Anton Koch, leading to his conversion to Catholicism. Wasmann later settled in Merano, where he became a sought-after portraitist and created religious commissions in the Nazarene style. His works are part of collections such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the National Gallery of Canada, and others.
The provenance of Portrait of a Boy in Profile traces back to the Sammlung Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt, Germany. It was bought by Georg Schäfer in 1962 and stayed in the collection until 2005 when a number of works from the collection was sold. The back of the painting has a Sammlung Georg Schäfer Schweinfurt label and an inventory number. This collection, established by industrialist Dr. Georg Schäfer (1896–1975), is renowned for its extensive holdings of 19th-century German art. In 2000, the Museum Georg Schäfer opened to the public. The museum boasts significant works by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Spitzweg, and Adolph von Menzel, among others. It stands as one of the most important private collections of its kind, comparable to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
The Museum Georg Schäfer continues to be a vital institution for the study and appreciation of German art from the late 18th to early 20th centuries, offering insights into the cultural and artistic developments of the period.

Portrait Drawing of a Gypsy Woman on Paper, Signed, 19th Century
Located in Stockholm, SE
A graphite profile portrait drawing of a woman on paper by Johannes Collin (1873-1951), signed “Johannes Collin 98” and titled “Zigenerska”. This early and unusual work by Collin presents his interest in refined drawing and capturing character even at a modest scale. It dates from 1898, a formative moment for the artist when he was studying arts and stands out as a somewhat rare example of his graphic or drawing work rather than his better known small bronzes.
Johannes Collin was born in 1873 in Skåne, south Sweden.
After passing his matriculation at the Cathedral School in Lund in 1892, he studied at university in 1894–96 and then turned to art studies.
From 1899 to 1901 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, and from 1903 to 1905 he studied sculpture in Paris.
Collin settled in Lund, Skåne and pursued a career as sculptor and poet. He died in 1951 in Lund.
He was the son of a farmer and raised in the Skåne countryside. Early on he developed a sensitivity to form, figure, and expression, combining his sculptural ambitions with literary leanings (he later published a small volume of poetry).
Collin appears to have had an individualistic personality: he moved in student and artistic circles in Lund, but also kept a modest, sometimes even eccentric public persona. In the mid-1930s, he increasingly turned to poetry and pared back his three-dimensional work.
From his early years, he gradually developed into a sculptor working in bronze and patinated materials. Much of his work consists of small‐scale bronzes with an intensity of expression. One critic (in Kulturens yearbook) wrote of Collin that “the monumental is not in the work’s external dimensions but in the attitude … your small sculptures have an inner monumentality”.
Collin exhibited his works in various venues: for example he took part in the Lund Exhibition (“Lundautställningen”) in 1907.
Internationally, he showed works in Munich in 1909 and 1913, where his efforts were positively reviewed.
A noteworthy retrospective or exhibition was held at the museum Kulturen in Lund, when a donation of Collin’s sculptures...

Portrait of a Young Man
17th Century
Oil on oak panel
Image size: 4 1/4 x 5 inches (11 x 13 cm)
Dutch ebonised frame
This small portrait is of a young man, staring inquisitively out towards the viewer. The realism of his appearance is striking, with great care taken in the depiction of the man’s features - for example, his full lips and the slight bump in the bridge of his nose. The man wears a rich burgundy doublet and a black cap and is adorned with gold accessories, indicating a degree of wealth - it is likely that this is a miniature portrait for a wealthy patron. The warm flesh tones of this painting and the intricate rendering of the man’s curly brown hair demonstrate the artistry of the painter, who has successfully captured the image of youth within his brushstrokes.
Rembrandt’s Pupils
Upon completing his artistic education, Rembrandt opened a studio and began to take students - the first of which were Gerrit Dou and Isaac Jouderville. The studio functioned as an art school, in which materials and guidance were provided - contrary to the studios of his peers, Rembrandt did not offer lodging to his pupils. The families of prospective pupils had to pay Rembrandt 100 guilders (enough for a house at the time) for this artistic education, and the profits from any works produced by pupils under Rembrandt would be paid to the master rather than kept by the student-artist - this contributed substantially to the master’s income. When taking on pupils, Rembrandt looked for those who could already paint, and guided their styles to reflect his. By choosing pupils who were somewhat experienced artists, Rembrandt had an array of painters that could be involved at any stage of assisting with the creation of his works - in this way, Rembrandt’s pupils often functioned as studio assistants as well. In order to perfect Rembrandt’s style, pupils would paint copies of their teacher’s works, sometimes adding their own distinct variations. They would use the same subjects and models as Rembrandt himself, and would accompany him on outdoor trips to paint nature and landscapes. The extensive copying and utilisation of same source materials has rendered Rembrandt’s work and the work of his pupils difficult to differentiate, even in the modern era.At least 50 pupils were taught by Rembrandt, with many continuing on to become his studio assistants. A few graduated into successful artists in their own right - for example, Govaert Flinck...
