About the Item
A stunning large scale oil painting on canvas of a beautiful woman. Here, the artist has given us a traditional portrait of a young woman, she has brown eyes and dark hair. Exquisitely painted by a master, Georg von Rosen, a Swedish painter. It is signed G. R in the bottom left. A simplistic portrait with stunning effect.
About the artist: Count Johan Georg Otto von Rosen was born on 13 February 1843 in Paris and died in 1923 in Stockholm. He was a Swedish painter renowned for his historical subjects and those related to Norse mythology. His father, Count Adolf Eugène von Rosen (1797-1886) who he later went on to paint, was Swedish Consul General. The family left Paris at the time of the 3rd French Revolution in 1848 and returned to Sweden. In 1855 he entered the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied until 1861.
In 1862 he visited the Great Exhibition in London and found the works of Belgian painter Hendrik Leys (1815-1869), which impressed him greatly. A few months later, he traveled to Antwerp to meet Leys and went on to work with him. A year later, he completed his first notable painting, The Entry of Sten Sture into Stockholm in 1471 for which the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts awarded him a gold medal and it is now in the Stockholm National Museum.
Rosen traveled throughout Europe, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Greece and Asia Minor. He returned to Sweden in 1865 with a vast collection of studies and sketches. He was admitted to the Academy for his painting 'Marriage at Smedshill Chapel in 1500' and received a pension from the Crown. He then traveled to Italy, visited his teacher Leys, and toured the museums of Munich .
He was appointed director of the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1881. He was also a member of the Copenhagen Academy and the Belgian Society of Watercolorists . Rosen admired the style of the old masters of the Flemish and Germanic schools.
