Geskel Saloman is a Danish-Swedish portrait and genre scene painter. He went to Sweden in 1850 where he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm where he studied with Johan Ludwig Lund. He exhibited mainly genre scenes and portraits, for instance that of the painter Conrad Christian Bøhndel and the portrait of Thomas Overskou for which he won the Neuhausenske Præmier in 1848.
Our portrait, due to its small size, its finesse, is very beautiful with nice details such as the necklace, the collar of the dress, the fingers and the book. The great beauty of this woman also adds to the charm of this unidentified portrait, which reminds of the portraits by Van Dyck from which the painter may have been inspired. .

Geskel Saloman
Though born in Denmark, Geskel Saloman trained with Johan Ludwig Lund at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts where he was awarded a medal in 1846. From 1850 his reputation grew rapidly to the point where he became one of the most popular portrait and genre scene painters in Sweden. Saloman exhibited widely in Scandinavia and abroad, and from 1854 he lived and worked in Paris where he studied with Thomas Couture (1815-1879). In the following year, the painting being offered for sale here was given an honourable mention at the Salon de Paris. Between 1860 and 1863 Saloman’s preoccupation with Orientalism lead him to travel to North Africa where he lived in the city of Algiers. In the 1870s Saloman taught at the Gothenburg Academy of Arts, became a professor of the Stockholm Academy and official portrait painter to the Swedish Royal Family.
